Augur, a Roman soothsayer or diviner who professed to foretell events by the flight of birds or other omens. His office was held in high repute by the heads of the state, who rarely undertook any project of importance without first consulting the auguries. The augur among the Romans held his office for life; at one time there were but two (generally patricians); but later their number was increased to nine and even more.
