From Popular Science Monthly. Published serially over about two years, this work's first chapter was intentionally the lead-off article in the May 1872 first issue of Popular Science Monthly. Herbert Spencer's ideas in this work had so impressed E.L. Youmans, he founded this magazine in no small measure as a vehicle to publish Spencer's writings in the United States. This work was popular and influential in the United States of the 1870s; for example, it motivated William Graham Sumner to teach the first sociology class in the United States (at Yale University) and this work was the first textbook used for Sumner's class. Later editions were published in non-serialized book form and remained in print through at least the 1960s.
