Mr. J. W. Sherer
The death took place at Bath on Saturday of Mr. John William Sherer, C.S.I., who was a member of the Bengal Civil Service when the India Mutiny broke out.
He joined Sir Henry Havelock's force in the advance on Cawnpore, and rendered services for which he received a letter of cordial thanks from Sir James Outram and was decorated with the Star of India. Mr. Sherer claimed that he and Bews were among the first to see the well of Cawnpore, and that he had the well filled in. He was appointed the first magistrate of Cawnpore, and afterwards became Judge of Mirzapore. He was twice married, his first wife was Louisa, daughter of Sir Henry Byng Harington, and his second, Annie, youngest daughter of Colonel Edward Watson, of the Bengal Army. He leaves four sons and five daughters. His eldest son, Mr. Walter Moyle Sherer, was names after a great-uncle, Moyle Sherer, who fought in the Peninsula under Wellington. The other three are officers serving in the Army. Mr. Sherer would have completed his 88th year had he lived until yesterday.
