To Adriana
by José Asunción Silva
Translated from the Spanish by Zach Powell.

While maybe your sadness is thinking
On your distant homeland and you feel cold
When you see where you are, and the delerium
Of fever touches your head,

I, dreaming of your love and your beauty,
Love that is no more because of the disgracefulness
Of the depths of my soul, which sent
To pain a greeting of tenderness.

If my errant thoughts go
In search of you in pairs from another world
With homesickness they find themselves alone

Over the waters of the gigantic sea
Among the purest and deepest sky
In the infinite rocking of the waves.
