Bible (King James)[edit]

The interwikis should probably be reverted. It is very unlikely that the actually link to a translation of the King James edition of the bible. We need to do some human investigation before doing interwikis in this area.--BirgitteSB 02:38, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

more interwiki madness[edit]

Wikisource as a whole[edit]

Can you detail for me what your goals are in regard to Wikisource as a whole? You have said general things such as you want to help, or standardize policy. But what specific things do you wish to achieve? --BirgitteSB 18:48, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for the late response. I have been busy IRL.
I wouldn't call it a goal... I feel it would be better for all wikimedia projects (not just wikisource) to have a standard on issues concerning interwiki. Of course each wiki will have its own flavor. But for example policy and issues concerning usernames in general, policy and issues concerning bots in general are issues best to have an interwiki standard. Local policy should be as restrictive or freer than this standard.
Consider the case of en.wikipedia policy banning non-latin charred usernames for example. Imagine how useless SUL would be... A user from Japanese wikipedia or any other non-latin charactered wiki would not be able to edit en.wikipedia had the username policy were not standardized. This is a mere example why such changes are particularly helpful. There is no reason to have a rule, polic or guideline for the sake of having one.
Like all volunteer projects I expect neither pay nor services for my contribution. It wouldn't be voluntary otherwise... :) As for spesific tasks I want to take care of, I would like to operate my bot for three major tasks.
  • Double redirects: I wish to take care of double redirects on all wikis operated by the foundation. This is a mindless task redirect.py can easily handle. One does not need to pay any attention while the bot processes this task. Despite this I frequently check what the bot is up to. This way I report redirect loops (redirects that form an infinite redirect loop with no end point) to the admins on local wikis.
  • Interwiki linking: This is also a mindless task for the most part yet interwiki links seems to be a complicated problem. This is not a technical problem but instead a cultural problem seemingly unique to wikibooks and wikisource alike. From what I can tell people are unsure how to use interwiki links. Since you know the problem so well, I wont bore you off with the details. The solution to this problem should be agreed on an interwiki level. This standardized consensus will need to be applied by an interwiki bot approved by each and every community. This is the function I hope to fulfill.
  • Commons delinking: When the toolserv dies, commons delinker dies. Us in commons have issues without commonsdelinker. You see when a commons administrator decides to delete an image officially he or she is neither expected nor required to remove every instance that image is used. But unofficially commons admins are expected not delete heavy use images unless there is a delinker bot ready to delink. It is very poor publicity to have zillions of red linked image links infesting a wiki. They will easily get out of control if left unattended. It is very difficult for a human to find and remove an image on tens or hundereds of wikis of which a good number has a special character set. It is not fun to hunt for a phrase among millions of "?"'s. Because the services of the bot is this vital, I decided to request permission to handle this task for cases where commonsdelinker becomes inoperable. I have no intention of running this function unless commons delinker dies.
  • I would be more than happy to deal with additional tasks.
Smaller wikis like wikisource do not need a whole lot of bot work. I am sure a human or twenty can handle these tasks manually but I feel rather than dealing with a task a mindless bot can handle, such people are better of working on something else. A bot cannot write articles for example.
I guess my ultimate goal is to take care of as many tasks from the hands of 'humans' so they have more time working on something else where bots cannot venture in. It is a waste to use human power for tasks cpu power can handle.

sync on it.source[edit]

Dear White Cat,

I recently added a lot of interwikis by hand on it.source in order to synchronize translatios and original texts. Obviously my work is partial (viz. involving only ns0), but many added interwikis should help your bot to synchronize a lot of sources so it would be useful if your bot could check them and spread missing interlinks on "non it." sources. - εΔω 17:10, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Purpose and documentation of templates[edit]

Statute Table formatting[edit]

A Minor issue appears to be the following : http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Page:Chronological_Table_and_Index_of_the_Statutes.djvu/57

When r=empty (in Statute Table Chapter) there seems to be an additional line break being generated in the short version, the issue doesn't occur with the long version.

It's not an immediate breakage issue, but it would be nice to have the table looking proffesional

Headers and footers[edit]

Hi, I see from comment on SFan's page that you're having problems seeing the headers and footers in the Page namespace. This is usually because of Preference settings. In the Editing tab of Preferences, there's a checkbox in the Advanced section that's labeled "Show header and footer fields ..." Make sure this is on. And in the beta section of the same preference pane, make sure that the "Enable enhanced editing toolbar" is off. The enhanced toolbar doesn't play nicely with the other setting.
