Welcome to Wikisource!
|
Now that you're here, you're probably wondering...
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikisource; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. We are a small community of approximately a hundred key people, with infinite help from random passersby. You might be wondering which of the two classes we consider you...well, I guess that's going to be up to you. You'll find we are own our little corner of the Wikimedia Foundation, free from all the drama, arguments and policy violations you may be used to seeing elsewhere. In fact, since we largely just republish exactly what others before us have already written, there is very little concern about "neutrality" for example. After all, if the text of a speech by Adolf Hitler is inflammatory and biased...wasn't that its purpose? If you're looking for a specific topic, you'll likely find it by navigating through Wikisource:Works, whether it's Portal:Islam or Portal:Mermaids. For overarching categories, you might be better looking at something like Category:Poems or Category:Novels. Of course, if you know the author's name, that's easiest of all, just plug in "Author:Rudyard Kipling" and you'll see everything he ever wrote (or was written about him!). |
|
Chances are, you have a favourite subject we don't cover very well...here's how to change that!
So, your favourite author or subject isn't very well represented on the project? Well as long as you make sure the texts fit the standards of Public Domain, you can add them yourself! (Like all rules, those are basic guidelines, if you want to play with exceptions to the rule, just ask any of the administrators for help) If the text doesn't already exist, just enter its name below and it will pre-load an editing page for you to set to work! Be sure to add {{no header}} to the top of the page, and then include categories so people can find it. If you can't think of any particular corners to improve on Wikisource, how about taking a look at Portal:Religious texts, Portal:Wars or Portal:Texts by Country for some ideas? Don't forget to list your contributions on those pages as well so others will find and read them in the future! |
Reading when you want, how you want

Places to go, people to meet
Well, if you've clicked all the way to this tab, you might as well plan on spending a few more hours acquainting yourself with our massive library. It's not perfect, sometimes there's an occasional misspelling or you'll see a text sorted incorrectly. So help us out, let us know, or fix it yourself! If you're bored and just wanting to grab a mop and bucket, then there are plenty of corners that need tidying. Works that need to be split into chapters, Works that need their licensing clarified, Works that need machine-read words corrected, Works that need page-numbers removed and Authors whose full names we don't know would all be a great place to start! |

- John, I thank you for the polite and heartfelt invitation to do some more work here and I do look forward to it. I will be in and out as time allows me. I strongly appreciate your welcome and your good manners far more than you would ever imagine. These are important to me and have been all of my life.

[edit] A finished work?
Did I just see that you finished a work? If so, hearty congratulations. I would also ask for you to consider adding it to Template:New texts. Noting the instructions on the bottom of that page on how to add a work, plus as add to the top, take one off the bottom. Doing that adds it to our front page.

- I placed a book consisting of 22 chapters on Wikisource but it is not "wikified" to the extent of having 22 chapters with links connecting to Wikipedia. So, is that considered "completed"? It should be easy to wikify the material but I have two other books I wish to add to Wikisource and have already added the titles and chapter contents. If wikifying by adding links is a necessity please let me know. Thank you, Brother Officer (talk) 16:33, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

- It is complete (which is probably a better word) as a text, which is what I was meaning, so can go to the front page. I am not sure that texts are ever finished being wikified. -- billinghurst (talk) 16:50, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

- When Billinghurst says front page he indeed means the main page. Inspect the new works section of the main page. You'll see the word "add". If you'd like to try to add, press it, and follow the instructions found in the template, as Billinghurst described above. The title, author and date of your new work will appear on the main page for a period of time. ResScholar (talk) 04:42, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Page:Popular Science Monthly Volume 2.djvu/789
tripped over this obituary that I thought that you may wish to proof read in situ so we can transclude to the main name space. billinghurst (talk) 02:37, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Template:Subpage-work001
Hi! I'm clearing up some templates. What is Template:Subpage-work001 for? It is unused. If it just a test page or a personal sandbox/staging area, would you mind moving it you a user subpage (maybe User:Brother Officer/Subpage-work001) and I will delete the template page. Cheers, Inductiveload—talk/contribs 03:21, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

- It is there because I am seeking and finding science fiction and historical fiction works that include Commander Matthew Fontaine Maury with the hope I learn more about him through those authors. That area is where I stored found information. I have also found excerpts by E A Poe and Herman Melville -- and I hope to find more. —Brother OfficerTalk 14:24, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

- I have found and moved your work to where you expected to find it at User:Brother Officer/Subpage-work001. Somehow (and I don't know how) you created it as a template rather than as a subpage. Anyway, all back in place. For your information, if you had look under Special:mycontributions I would think that you would have found it in the list. Billinghurst (talk) 09:41, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

[edit] The mysterious Header toggle button
When proofreading in the Page: namespace and one has their toolbar turned on [Gadgets | Editing (tab) | Editing toolbar (checkbox)], one will see the button
, and clicking it toggles the header/footer on and off. In this space we put the relevant components for top and bottoms of pages, usually by use of the template {{RunningHeader}}, so for example {{RunningHeader|Stanhope|3|Stanhope}} produces
|
Stanhope Stanhope 3 |
I personally have my header/footer set to open in the Page: namespace and I achieved this by activating that option in my Gadgets. To also note that at this time, the use of the newer Wikieditor toolbar (Editing tab in My preferences) does not yet display all the tools that we utilise for proofreading. If you turn it off in your preferences you access the older toolbar and more editing options. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:08, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- I see no use to toggle that button. If anything it is confusing because it isn't needed. I think it should be deleted and something better can be placed in that spot. I too am now doing as you have taught me. I have the system set to show the header and footer every time. I thank you, Billinghurst, you always come through to assist others and there is great honor in that. Respectfully, —Brother OfficerTalk 05:27, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Southern Historical Society Papers
Two questions about the Southern Historical Society Papers:
1) Some of the scans at the Internet Archive combine two volumes into one DjVu file. Are these OK to transfer directly to Commons like the others or would you like them to be split (this will take longer)? It shouldn't make a difference to the final version in the main namespace either way but the former will mean one Index page covering two volumes in a few cases (if that matters).
2) I started the Southern Historical Society Papers page with a list of volumes and the first page of the first volume (just the contents). Is this OK? - AdamBMorgan (talk) 11:51, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
- Adam, anyway that works best for you is fine with me. You decide what workes best as I will be doing page-by-page no matter what. When all is completed each volume should be seperate though. What you have done thus far is excellent. I would like to see volume 2 indexed though. Also, I own these old volumes and where the Internet Archive is missing a volume (i.e. vol.5) I can scan my hardcopy volume(s) although I really don't want that extra work. I will wait to see if Microsoft or someone else uploads the missing volumes. Either way, we here will not have to have missing volumes. Respectfully, —Brother OfficerTalk 18:00, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
