Getting started[edit]
One of the best ways to learn the ropes is by doing stuff here. Preferrably, work together with experienced and friendly people on the same project, and explicitly let people know that you're new and want feedback to learn the ropes. You can also find an experienced editor working on something that interests you, and shadow them. Watch the edits they make, and use the "Edit" tool to see what they did and how they did it. That's pretty much how I got started here.
In particular, watch for the start of a Proofread of the Month project that interests you and get involved. I learned a lot, and learned it very quickly, by doing that. The current PotM is just about finished, but when that happens mid-month, we often begin another one to keep things going. Otherwise they begin at the start of each new month.
Also, if you want to continue working on a project of your own, just focus for now on text that's easy to edit and format while you're still learning the move advanced things. In your case, you seem to have started on a volume of poetry, which is one of the tougher things to manage, so I'd actually advise setting it aside for a while, maybe linking it from your user page to keep track of it for now. You can also look through the "validated" poetry items on my User page (in green, near the top of the listings). Depending on the poems you're dealing with, you might find enough to help you learn the basics and get started. Generally, though, it's better to start with prose that doesn't require lots of additional formatting, until you feel comfortable with the basics. --EncycloPetey (talk) 00:36, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
