Thanks for your validation work

Hi, just want to drop by and thank you for your work on validating various pages. Just a small note about emdashes and endashes. An emdash is usually printed without spaces either side of it, and if there is space it will be at the most a thin-space about ¼ em in width. I also see you're replacing the emdash character (—) with the &; written out character. Would you like me to add the buttons for emdash and endash to your edit toolbar? Thanks for your feedback. Re "no spaces surrounding emdashes"—Got it! :) As for replacing the emdash character with the &; written out character: Ah, I see. Using View history and going back to the proofread version of one of the pages (prior to my validation and edits), when I look at the page, I can see that the character is an emdash; whereas in the editing pane it looks to me the same as a standard modern-day keyboard dash (which is an endash? idk?) - so, my update was unnecessary in the first place, and then detrimental because of adding the spaces. Sorry :( As for adding the buttons for emdash and endash to my edit toolbar: yes, that might be helpful, thank you! By the way, when I try to click on 'Special characters' in the toolbar, it seems to just 'spin' for a long time without actually loading. Does this indicate a problem with one of my preference settings? A "modern-day keyboard dash" is hyphen-minus and should not generally be used for a dash of any kind, it may be used as a hyphen or a minus sign, though in theory, the more precise characters are preferable and it has the wrong vertical placement for a proper minus sign:

1. — em dash
   
2. – en dash
   
3. ‒ minus sign (looks very similar to an en dash but technically isn't)
   
4. − figure dash (although this may appear to be the same width as the en dash, its size depends on the width of digits, whereas an en dash should be ½ em wide. More importantly, they have a different purpose)
   
5. - hyphen-minus (which is what you get on the keyboard normally when you shift the underscore)
   
6. ‐ hyphen
   

There are also non-breaking hyphens (U+2011), horizontal bars (U+2015), etc.--Doug.^{(talk • contribs)} 13:47, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

OK, I've added the buttons to your editing toolbar. They should appear at the right hand end. By the way, I suspect that you are using the "Enhanced editing toolbar". This is still a beta version and it doesn't always behave. I suggest you turn it off (on the Editing pane of Preferences), but make sure that in the "Advanced" box just above it that the "Show edit toolbar (requires JavaScript) is turned on. For special characters, there is a box at the bottom of the editing screen which has a drop-down menu labeled Select. This has lots of special characters in various groupings. If you have a big enough screen, there is a Gadget that you can use to have this box fully expanded. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 07:03, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

Your account will be renamed

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called LiniShu. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name LiniShu~enwikisource that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
