Edit Watchlist

Theornamentalist, how would I go about editing my watchlist. I have looked around throughout preferences, miscellaneous, watchlist, and gadgets but cannot find how to edit a watchlist. There are certain people I seek to learn codes, ccs, javascripts, &c. from like you, Inductiveload, George Orwell III and a host of other editors/administrators. I have a vague recall of once seeing an area that showed "raw edit" of a watchlist whereby one adds names such as yours although you are already on my watchlist. Some names I rarely see. Request for Advice

Hello Theornamentalist.

I have made a first (and in fact second!) stab at reproducing the ornate chapter footer on Page:History of West Hoboken NJ.djvu/35, but am not entirely happy that the result is not as crisp as your efforts elsewhere in this same book. Is the result acceptable, and if not have you any suggestions how to improve the image (in particular, was use of PNG my biggest mistake here)?

In the text of Page:History_of_West_Hoboken_NJ.djvu/37, the contraction "Chas." has been expanded into "Charles", and I would like your advice/opinion/position on whether this kind of expansion is correct; or whether Wikisource should strictly follow the original form? I am happy either way, but would appreciate some guidance.

It looks like I took a hybrid path in attempting to capture the footer image. I did in fact take it from archive.org, but from their .djvu source. In attempting to follow the processing hints given at Help:Adding_images, the result from the 'convert' command was quite unusably washed out, and I settled for an intermediate image I had fortunately kept as the least-worst case! I shall have to try again under better circumstances, if only to get the steps right.

War of the Worlds

I just noticed that our copy of The War of the Worlds was utterly broken due to the djvu file being deleted at Commons.

Commons observes the legal requirement that it may not host material that is under copyright in the US, where its servers are hosted...

and it also observes the site policy of not hosting material that is under copyright in the country of origin.

The War of the Worlds meets the legal requirement, but not the Commons policy. Wikisource is under no obligation to conform its own site policy with Commons site policy. Therefore I have uploaded it to Wikisource under the same title as it previously was at Commons. Everything is happily back up except that the mainspace pages might need to be purged.

Communist Manifesto

Hi Ornamentalist, I'd be very happy to see a proper discussion and perhaps an official Wikisource policy on the question of adverts. Do we leave them in or exclude them? I presume the ad you are referring to was Page:Manifesto of the Communist Party.djvu/64 and I was rather amused that people had proofread and verified an advert for a History of The Supreme Court of the United States in this subversive publication, but not even bothered to create the next page which contained an ad for Engels' Origin of the Family, which is, I would think, historically a far more important document.

I was at first inclined to mark the others as not needing to be proofread and leave that page, but what's the point? It's not transcluded to the main space anyway and if people want to look further they can and they can read both the original and the transcription if it's there. Should we not consider a transcription complete until every advertisement is transcribed? I'd like to see it discussed. Chris55 (talk) 20:44, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

I have no objection to adverts being transcluded - personally I often find them fascinating and (afaik) there's nothing to prevent one transcluding a page which has a 0 status in the proofread extension. But the presence of uncreated or unproofread pages does create problems if they are not marked individually as unnecessary. I've been working through several hundred works which have a few pages not proofread (from here) and each one is different. In some cases it appears someone got tired, in many cases they couldn't manage to upload a few pictures, and in others they didn't know how to deal with adverts or some other situation (e.g. footnotes spanning several pages or hanging indents in indexes). I changed the pagelist status in the above example from — to adv so that people could see what was there and that seems enough in that particular case.

But I do think we need to get more projects to the "Done" state. The recent statistics are appalling. And I've seen quite a few cases recently where people have turned back the status of a project from needing verification to needing proofreading because a few problem pages crop up. That seems to me another misunderstanding of the status. Certainly we need better procedures - possibly a compulsory review when a project is moved forward. But at the moment we don't even have the tools to set these up. Chris55 (talk) 21:33, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Here's another not dissimilar problem: Page:Love and Freindship.djvu/201. I marked this as not needing to be proofed because the same picture appears on p3 - it's one of the inside cover illustrations. Should we hold the whole process back on this book because we haven't got both copies? This page was marked blue. Someone has commented "desirableendpaperrepeatedfromstartofwork". Desirable, maybe, but it hasn't been fixed in 3 years. (And after all that's why the publisher printed it twice, because they knew what libraries do.) Chris55 (talk) 22:16, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

On Wiktionary, we use the template {{Deva}} for display of Devanagari script, but it calls {{scriptt}} whose coding is a bit abstruse for me. I think you misunderstood. The {{?}} is used to mark text that could not or was not transcribed. I am asking whether Wikisource has a template that ensures Devanagari script that is included in a text will display correctly on a reader's monitor. Many browsers do not support non-Latin scripts (or even some extended Latin) without script assistance. On Wiktionary, we use script-specific templates to aid this. I've received help from Dcmdevit via the wikisource channel. I would like to have the whole series uploaded eventually. There are a couple hundred issues I think. The version Dcmdevit uploaded is now here; it contains the watermark and there is a large addition of borders around the page scans. I'll bet you were getting graphics/format errors in your attempts at conversion - the PDF you linked in File: summary at Google books (~428 pages, more than 1 issue it seems) looks like it was compiled by a fifth grader.

I'm running Acrobat 10 against it now and its as slow as ever (which means its trying to deal with the images/layers peppered throughout the file). Don't know how long it will take or how much better off you'll be when done but removing the watermark always helps OCR routines better identify columns from one another so the final text layer will always be a bit less problematic at any rate. I'll touch back here when done. Note: Depending on the end file size, I might have to upload here on en.WS under my flood flag so it won't time out before the whole file is up. -- George Orwell III (talk) 23:17, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

OK I've uploaded the optimized, watermark-free PDF from GoogleBooks over your previous PDF on Commons. If you want to get a text-layer for that - uploading it to IA seems like the best solution since they will create a DjVu in the process as well. I would have split it up into the separate issues but I'm sort of dealing with people displaced by the flood downtown at the same time here. Hammurabi

Ah, I see you're working on the illustrations for this, and discovered the title correction and move I made earlier today. Both are good to see. It turned out that the title of the work was quite different from the title of the file and pages, which would have led to a huge headache later on, so I went ahead and made the move while there were still relatively few pages created. The Index page should now indicate most of the page illustrations, but I fear the final six plates will be difficult to clean up, as they are ancient monuments bearing cuneiform, which were photographed, printed, scanned, and then compressed. And as it is short, highly illustrated, and fun, it seemed to me like the sort of book you like to do. (Pete) - I just split them up; I agree that the continuity of the text is better this way, rather than the interruptions by the illustrations. However, I don't like that the main body of the work is aligned on the right. Any thoughts? I was thinking maybe to align the body of text centered, and have the images to the right, or left, or alternating. Eitherway, not sure. Let me know what you think.

I don't see the overall right shifting of the text as a problem. I do think that having the poem run continuously in a column (as it does now) would be preferrable to having it alternate left and right with images. The current layout makes for easier reading.
