William Stukeley
(1687–1765)

Antiquary, ed. at Cambridge. Initially practising as a physician, took orders in 1729 and held benefices at Stamford and in London. Pioneered the archaeological investigation of Stonehenge and Avebury and was one of the pioneers of field archaeology. One of the founders of the Society of Antiquaries.
