This work comprises a hundred volumes and was published by the government of India. Volumes numbers 91-97 were published as Supplementary Volumes, while Volumes 98-100 were indices. A first edition was published between in 1960 and 1994. A second edition was published from 1998, in which the volume boundaries were changed to coincide with particular months of Gandhi's life. This second edition sparked a deep controversy. Following many criticisms from researchers and followers of Gandhi, the government of India stopped the publication of the second edition.

At least the first 31 volumes are in the public domain in the USA. The totality of Gandhi's works is in the public domain in India since December 31, 2008.

Early writings are usually in English. Later writings might be originally also in Gujarati and Hindi. Mahadev Desai, who was the personal secretary of Gandhi, died in 1942, so his translations are in the public domain in India. He translated many texts from Gandhi, including his autobiography. Mahadev Desai's works are not public domain in USA if published after 1927.

Formatting[edit]

Each volume gets a page, and then texts are grouped by weeks, months or years, depending on the quantity. Each title redirects to the corresponding page.

Footnotes should be at the bottom of sections. Use {{ref|1}} at the location of the footnote and  :'''1'''{{Note|1}}} at the location in the section where you put the footnote. Don't put footnotes in the titles even if they are in the source document. Put the footnote on the next line to allow easy referencing.

Throughout the documents, newspapers and speeches are cited. These are typically highlighted by indenting them, but other methods may work better.
