- סדר תענייות כיצד
- מוציאין את התיבה לרחובה של עיר;
- ונותנין אפר מקלה על גבי התיבה ובראש הנשיא ובראש אב בית דין
- וכל אחד ואחד נוטל ונותן בראשו
- והזקן שבהם אומר לפניהם דברי כיבושים
- אחינו לא נאמר באנשי נינווה וירא האלוהים את שקם ואת תעניתם
- אלא וירא האלוהים את מעשיהם כי שבו מדרכם הרעה (יונה ג,י)
- ובקבלה הוא אומר וקרעו לבבכם ואל בגדיכם ושובו אל ה' אלוהיכם
- כי חנון ורחום, הוא--ארך אפיים ורב חסד, וניחם על הרעה" (יואל ב,יג).
English Translation[edit]
What is the order of service on a fast? They carry the ark out to the open area of the town, and they place burnt ashes on the ark, and on the head of Nasi, and on the head of the president of the court, and everyone else puts ashes on their head.
The elder among them says before them words of admoition: Our brothers, it is not said about the people of neveh: And G-D (Blessed be he, he is the master of the universe) saw there sack cloth and there fast, but rather: And G-D (Blessed be his name) saw their deeds, that they had returned from their evil way and in the prophets it says: And rend your heart, and not your garments.
They stand up in prayer. They send down before the ark an elder, who is well versed (in the prayers), and who has children and whose house is empty, so his heart will be perfect in the prayer.
And he says before them twenty four blessings, the eighteen for every day and he adds to them another six.
