Copyright tags[edit]

As I have visited Help:Copyright tags, shall we tag all pages eventually?

About copyright tagging, I'm of the opinion that not everything needs one. Anything that would be classified as "PD-old," "PD-old-70," or "PD-US," I don't see why it would need to have a tag. Now, things that are public domain because they're works of a government or things published under the GFDL, I would say need tags. Of course, I'm not going to stop anyone from tagging all the pages if he or she wants to.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 13:48, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

soufron[edit]

did you see his blog entry? i linked it on scriptorium. Wolf man 14:44, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I understand it's really easy for you to delete other people's work, but I would have appreciated it if you had warned me so I could have moved "Labyrinth of Solitude" to Wikiquote. You also could have pressed CTRL+C and CTRL+V on your keyboard to move it yourself, but that would have too hard for someone like you to do, I guess. --Primetime 04:42, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

You're the Copyright Nazi, so I figure if I can get you to say it's not violation, it's likely safe :Þ Anyways, I had a question on the Scriptorium I hoped you could offer an opinion on. Sherurcij 07:13, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding {{Copyvio}} to Gadsby. I sould have thought of that. --Droll 05:16, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Protection Requests[edit]

Hi Jusjih, Thanks for protecting the 2 speeches. On the copyright status we've discussed this on the Scriptorium and taken the view that copyright issues don't prevent us hosting publicly made political speeches (as the whole point of these speeches is to disseminate the speakers views). AllanHainey 07:17, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you're asking? I don't see any conflict between not taking fair use & non-commercial licences & hosting of political speeches. In the link above I'd argued that speeches were fair use & defended keeping fair use documents because I thought otherwise we'd have to delete the speeches but the consensus is that they're not fair use and we don't need to delete them. AllanHainey 07:12, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Jusjih, I can't comment on whether UN resolutions are fair use or not as I don't know anything about this issue. We decided political speeches weren't fair use but a seperate case with their own special circumstances. I don't know how for this would transfer over to UN resolutions, I'd suggest you raise the issue on the Scriptorium. By the way I don't know what you're talking about regarding Wolfman raising this issue as he hasn't made an edit on wikisource since December 2005. AllanHainey 07:33, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the link, I haven't read through it yet but I think it would be better to open the issue out by raising your concerns at the scriptorium, it really seems like something which is better to be discussed by the wider community rather than just us. AllanHainey 07:31, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats on the Commons Adminship[edit]

I just happened to find a problem (copyright) at commons today. I nominated commons:Category:Snodgrass for deletion, it is related to Insects, Their Ways and Means of Living. I couldn't find the instructions for copyright problems so it isn't tagged. In fact I am not sure all the images are from that book but at least half of them are. Can you see that the rest of the way through?--BirgitteSB 00:57, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They are all tagged now. Thanks for the help. I was looking for a copyright tag and didn't realize that Commons uses the regular deletion tag for copyright violations.--BirgitteSB 14:50, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Patrolled edits[edit]

Hi Jusjih,

I want to point to your attention that since we have patrolled edits enabled on this wiki and because you're an admin here, you can select under "preferences" > "editing" to mark your changes as patrolled. That way, any edits you make will not have the red "!" by them. Since no one needs to check your edits to make sure you aren't vandalizing pages, you might want to consider automatically marking your own edits as patrolled :-).—Zhaladshar (Talk) 19:22, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for reminding. I have enabled it.--Jusjih 13:52, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RFD[edit]

Hi Jusjih. Could you delete User:Vildricianus/monobook.css please? There's an ugly bug here, and although my CSS file doesn't have anything to do with it, I want it cleared before I file a bug report. The thing is exactly that I can't it, though, so someone else should. Vildricianus 17:57, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

Never mind. Problem solved. Vildricianus 09:10, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Relative links[edit]

I've fixed the relative links, my apologies for messing them up. Jude (talk, contribs, email) 02:57, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you think that this'll make things easier for linking, etc, then yes, they could be moved... There don't appear to be many; if you'd like me to move them, let me know, and I'll put it on my list. Jude (talk) 09:06, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

National anthems[edit]

I did that at Jude`s suggestion, I completely blame him :). Seriously though, I do see your point. Do you think it would be better if I moved them to the transliterated name of the anthem, or the english translation of the name?--Shanel 20:09, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New UN resolution[edit]

Can you look into Wikisource:Possible copyright violations#UN Security Council Resolution/1718? It was obtained from the UN website but I am not sure how you determine if it might be a US govt work. Thanks!--BirgitteSB 05:12, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rule of shorter term essay[edit]

I just wanted to say that I appreciate your work on the the rule of the shorter term issue. I think the petition is the right idea. Many of our lawmakers, if they are anything like us, probably don't know much about copyright law. They might not realize how frustrating it is. That is to say I think many would be very simpathetic to the idea that you are proposing. I will say though, that I found the essay to be somewhat cryptic, a bit difficult to glean the thesis. This is, of course, a product of the confusing nature of the issue discussed. Nonetheless I think if you can tighten up the organization around the thesis you'll get alot more wiki-people to sign on. Some of your sentences are a little difficult to read. I cleaned up the first paragraph a little. check to make sure I didn't stray from what you meant. --Metal.lunchbox 03:07, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are right about the nicknames, lacks legitimacy. However you may loose some people in the redirect to another site. Just make sure that users don't have to go through a maze to get to sign the petition. --Metal.lunchbox 13:27, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think of the copyright situation discussed here?--BirgitteSB 20:56, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have replied there. You should feel glad to have a Chinese-speaking admin here to answer your concern.--Jusjih 23:58, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I am very glad!--BirgitteSB 12:52, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Incomplete nomination for deletion[edit]

Hello Jusjih. You recently placed the {{delete}} template on Author:Tony Benn[1], but did not add the nomination to Wikisource:Proposed deletions. If you intended to mark it for speedy deletion, please see the criteria and use {{sdelete}} instead. —{admin} Pathoschild 18:41:36, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

The author page is for author whose works are all copyrighted. Changed to speedy deletion tag.--Jusjih 04:42, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PD-old-70[edit]

Dear Jusjih,

Regarding the use of the {PD-old-70} template:

For all works published in the 20th century before 1923 it may be helpful to explain to users that the work is no longer under copyright in the U.S; hence the first sentence of the pd-1923 form.

For works published in the 20th century before 1923 and whose author died after 1936, it may be helpful to explain to users that the "70-years after the author's death" may not apply in non-U.S. countries (due to the rule of the shorter term); hence the second sentence of the pd-1923 form.
For works published in the 20th century before 1923 and whose author died before 1936, it may be helpful to explain to users that "70-years after the author's death" now applies to all the author's works; hence the use of the pd-old-70 form.

Therefore, in the second case of the second condition, two templates may be helpful to explain the law concerning its copyright.

The natural place to do this is on the author page, where the works are collected together as a unit, and the copyright conditions can be stated once instead of, as would sometimes have to happen, adding two templates to every work.

I admit that there should be some exceptions to this rule. For example if there is no author page or if the date of the author's death is unknown.

But what I said is why I think that in general the use of the {PD-old-70} and {PD-1923} templates should be discouraged on "works" pages.

Since you are concerned about the increase of pages without categories, I will begin adding a Date category (like [category:1909 works]) to the pages where I remove the PD-old-70 category. I had been adding the date of publication as I went already, but left it to others to add that article to the date category.

I hope this note addresses your concerns in the matter. If not, please leave another note on my user page.

Thank you,

License templates[edit]

Hi, Jusjih,

I noticed you've been adding license tags to author pages. I was wondering if instead of adding the "author-" prefix to the templates (e.g., {{author-PD-old}} and {{author-PD-old-70}}), you could just leave the "author-" part off? We've redone those templates to use ParserFunctions, so {{PD-old}} and {{PD-old-70}} will detect which namespace the page is it's being placed on, and will give a message depending on whether it is an Author page or an actual work.

Thanks!—Zhaladshar (Talk) 16:13, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The auto detection seems to be on. I will keep testing shorter entries without prefixing "Author-". However, as Chinese Wikisource has not the same thing and I have been busy at English Wikiquote and am now running for admin there, I did not know the improvement here. Thanks for informing.--Jusjih 16:36, 6 August 2007 (UTC)(admin at 9 Wiki sites)[reply]

UN[edit]

I agree we're probably going to want to put them back on their own sub-pages, but the table route simply didn't seem to be working, and a simple -04- appearing in a table cell wasn't amenable to telling what assembly/date/resolutions the reader was looking for. I'm not sure of what you mean about redirects, I just want to follow the WS: style as much as possible for "container" pages that sort actual source texts, rather than being source texts themselves. Canadian posthumous copyrights[edit]

For my analysis of this issue see User talk:Yann#Posthumous rights under Canadian copyright law. They were 50 years from publication, but that has changed. Eclecticology 06:34, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There has been a lot of changes to this page, which I havent been able to patrol as I dont know the language. Could you take a look, or ask someone else too. John Vandenberg (chat) 04:48, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They look fine. If you are unsure of any later changes, just ask me and I will answer you.--Jusjih 01:06, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Personal favour[edit]

Hey, I noticed from WS:Admins that you're the only one here who speaks Mandarin, I wondered if you could translate a short blurb for me? If it's too long, even just translating the first two sentences would be enough to get a stub started :)

Omar Khadr (born September 19, 1986) is the fourth child in the Canadian Khadr family. He was captured at the age of 15 by American forces in Afghanistan following a July 2002 firefight in which an American Special Forces soldier was killed.

The only Western citizen remaining in Guantanamo, Khadr is unique in that Canada has refused to seek extradition or repatriation despite the urgings of Amnesty International.

He has been held in Guantanamo Bay for the past six years, and is currently awaiting a military tribunal.

Much thanks, it's going to be an EN. featured project soon, and I'd like to at least have stubs in other languages prepared :) Sherurcij Collaboration of the Week: William Lyon Mackenzie King 07:11, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please let me know which article you are talking about when available. As I pay much more attention to Communist Chinese Laws posted on Chinese Wikisource, I cannot guarantee translating anything else.--Jusjih 01:59, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've been trying to deal with the old stuff at Wikisource:Proposed deletions and this page was in turn linked from Category:Non-English works whose languages are known. You are probably in the best position to decide what to do with this since most of the rest of us can't understand it. Eclecticology (talk) 19:11, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is in traditional Chinese. Long before it was posted in 2007, I already posted the same Taiwanese law on Multilingual Wikisource before Chinese Wikisource was opened. As a courtesy, I have imported the full edit history to Chinese Wikisource and deleted the article here. Thank you for your message. Looking at the list of all articles, there is none in Chinese now.--Jusjih (talk) 01:45, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I found another one except that it as a romanized title: Manzhouyuanliukao. Eclecticology (talk) 20:56, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It was started here at very close time as on Chinese Wikisource zh:滿洲源流考. I have moved it to 滿洲源流考, exported it to Chinese Wikisource, and deleted it. Thanks again.--Jusjih (talk) 01:31, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help! My Watched List is being flooded![edit]

Thanks for the massive clean-up and addition of tags, just a quick note to let you know it's greatly appreciated that you'd spend so much of your afternoon on it! Sherurcij Collaboration of the Week: Author:Nostradamus‎. 23:33, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My Watched List is also flooded. I am phasing out the uses of {{PD-old-70}} and phasing in {{Pd/1923}} to automate copyright updating based on how long author died. After all, you are welcome.--Jusjih (talk) 23:39, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What is the dispute at the Chinese Wikisource? Do they have a different policy about manifestos than English Wikisource? Coppertwig (talk) 20:27, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome. They are disputing whether the Chinese version should be accepted. I am holding a vote to see whether to accept PD-manifesto there. If most users there are against this type of works, I will send them to Canadian Wikilivres: where works with non-commercial licenses are accepted, which is different from here.--Jusjih (talk) 00:45, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hint[edit]

Wouldn't it be faster to run a bot to tag everything in Category:1916 works, etc? I know it wouldn't account for everything, but it'd speed things up greatly for you and free up your afternoons :) Sherurcij Collaboration of the Week: Author:Carl Jung. 03:19, 14 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but unfortunately I do not know how to run a bot, so I manually replace tags based on which years authors died. If any advanced users know how, perhaps we should have a bot to combine PD-1923 and PD-old-70 into automated tags based on when authors died.--Jusjih (talk) 03:22, 14 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Enacting formula[edit]

I see you have done lots of good work on RoC legal measures....I have a small question, do RoC Acts etc have an "enacting formula" - If they do, I might add it into the various Acts you have helped translate/upload. If you are not sure what I mean by enacting formula, you might have a look at "List of enacting clauses" on the general Wikipedia website. Thanks. Regards. Formosa (talk) 22:35, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I started doing some of these even before English and Chinese Wikisources broke away from the multilingual portal. Unfortunately I have stopped bothering with these English translations for some time as many governmental translations have very poor quality in my eyes in the USA. Whoever translated them might not have learned English very well. As I am more active on Chinese Wikisource I am less interested in English translations of ROC and PRC laws. I hope to come back for these, but I cannot promise when. Thanks.--Jusjih (talk) 03:04, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
