HERBERT (MARY), Countess of Pembroke,

A great encourager of letters, and herself an ingenious poet. Her character on the whole may be fairly judged from the epitaph.

Underneath this sable hearse
Lies the subject of all verse,
Sidney's sister, Pembroke's mother.
Death, ere thou hast slain another,
Fair and learned, good as she,
Time shall throw a dart at thee.
