עליל m. (b. h.; עלל) 1) entrance. Sot. 45a; Y. ib. IX, 23a bot. לעיר בע׳ נמצא if the slain was found at the entrance tto a town (where there can be no doubt as to the nearest place); Tosef. ib. IX, 1 העיר בע׳ (Var. עיר של בחלול). -- 2) (cmp. עלילות) reality; בע׳ really, undoubtedly. R. Hash. עלילהf. (b. h.; preced.) 1) [bringing about, causation,] dealing, government, disposition. -- Pl. עלילות. Ex. R. s. 2, v. עות. -- 2) (v. עילה) [round about way,] circumvention, perverseness, insidiousness; pretegd, false charge. Snh. 101b בע׳ באו שלשה three men (Biblical personages) came with indirectness (instead of praying in a straightforward manner). Gen. R. s. 93 בע׳ עלינו באת מתחלה from the start thou camest against us with insidiousness (trying to find charges against us); Tanh. Vayigg. 5; Yalk. Gen. 15 1. Esth. עלילותא f.=h. עלילה, 1) doing, disposition. Yalk. Ps. 859 וכ׳ עלילותיה . .. נשא בר הוי (not יהוי) O man, how the Merciful dealswith thee --- 2) indirectness, perverseness. Sabb. 88b בע׳ דסגן those who walk perverse ways, oppp. בשלימותא.

עלל (b. h. עולל Pol. to bring about) to go about, 1) (cmp. סור Ich.) to superintend, be busy. Koh. R. to VI, 10 . . מלר בו לעלול לאריס ומסרו a King that had a vineyard and gave it in charge of a tenant to attend to it (ed.
