אונקלוס, אנקלוס pr. n. m. (Ocellus?) Onk'los, the alleged translator of the Pentateuch into Chaldaic, freq. surnamed הגר the proselyte; often identified with Aguila, the alleged author of a Greek translation of the Bible; v. עקילס. Cmp. Meg. 3a; Ab. Zar. 11a, with Tanh. Mishp. 5. Cant. R. to I, 11 אלקולאון q. v.

אונקלי I, אנקלי f. (אנק, with ל format.; =אונקי; corresp. to b. h. לולי; Greek adapt. ~o, LXX Ex. XXVI, 10; cmp. אוני as to contact of the two languages) prop. little (camel's) neck, hence 1) hook, rack. Kel. XII, 2 כתפין של א׳ Ar. (ed. אונקליות, אונקלין with adject. in the sing., corr. acc.) the carriers' hook attached to their yoke, pole &c. Ib. דרגש של א׳ the hook of the bed- stead (used for fastening the girths to the posts); של נקליטין the rack of the bed-curtain, v. נקליטין. Ib. 3 שבכותלים א׳ hook attached to walls. - T'bul Yom IV, 6 קיימת שלהם ואנ׳ and the hook (attached tto the now broken yoke) remained unimpaired; a. fr. -- l.. אונקלאות, אנק׳, אונקליות (אונקלין). Tam. (medic.) bent cartilage, esp. the cartilage (cart. ensiformis) at the end of the sternum which, being bent inside, presses on the stomach and creates nausea &c. Ab. Zar. 29a וכ׳ א׳ מעלין you are permitted to lift the cartilage on the Sabbath (bby means of a bandage &c.). Ib. וכ׳ א׳ מאי what unklay is meant? Ans. the cartilage in front of the heart; v. איסתומכא.
אונקלי II, אונקל, נקלה, ניקלי f (נקל, קל, cmp. esp. II Sam. VI, 20 to 22) the light garment, whence, a name for the easy dress worn in the house and, under the cloak, in the street, but in which it was unbecoming to appear in public. [Cmp. II Sam. l. c. a. Num. R. s. 4; a. e.] Y. Yoma VI, 43d top אונקלה, נקלה, for which Men. 109b אונקלי. Snh. 82a he took of the point of his spear באונקלו והניחה (some ed. לי --) and put it (hiding it) in his undergarment. M. Kat. 24a וכ׳ בא׳ מטייל אבל (Ms. M. אבל מטייל) a mourner may walk on the Sabbath within the limits of his house (garden &c.) in the easy dress (showing the rent on account of a death in the family; Rashi). אוסי, אוסיא (or או׳) m. pl. (אף soft. into או; cmp. ףk, אנף; also אפס) nose, nostrils. Sabb. 67a ואאוסי דגוריתא and on the nostrils of the young lioness. B. Bath. 73b ומית טינא אכלה באוסיה עליה דסליק Ms. R. (ed. באוסי׳ טינא אכלה ליה דיתבא, Ms. M. אבלה, Ar. ed. Koh. incorr., v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.) into whose nostrils a mud-eater' (worm) entered, and the fish died. Pes. 112a וכ׳ אאוסיא ידא (Ms. M. a. Ar. איפגא) putting the hand to the nose is a step to fear (indicating anxiety). Hull. 67b באוסייה ועיילי and they (the worms) creep into its nostrils.
