אל״ף Alef, the first letter of the Alphabet. Y. Snh. I, 18a bot.; a. fr. Y. Yeb. IV, 6a באל״ף רבה בה״י שהוא כל רבא (referring to harbah arbeh Gen. III, 16) the embryo that counts harbah with He, (the numerical value being 21 2-- days), will grow; that which counts arbeh with Alef (i. e. 208 days, or less than seven months) will lie down (die); (cmp. הרבה for differ. versions). - B. Bath. 68b וכ׳ בית א׳ mere Alef Beth (arbitrary words). Gen. R. s. 1 תגר קרא הא׳ the Alef complained. -- Y. Sabb. אלפס, אילפס c. (=לפס q. v.) a tightly covered pot, stew-pot, contrad. to קדירה a boiling pot. Ned. 51a a dish goes first in a pot לאי׳ שיורד קודם before it is put in a stew-pot for steaming. Y. Hall. I, 58a top. - Pes. 37a אי׳ מעשה stew. -- Gen. R. s. 1, end וכיסויו כא׳ as a pot with its lid. -- Pl. אלפסין. Bets. 32a, v. אירונית.
*אלצרין, אלסרין m. pl. (Syr. אלסרא P. Sm. 155; 21 2; an abbrev. of אלכסנדרין, v. אלכסין) a species of pistachio (tree or fruit). Y. Dem. II, beg. 22b; Y. Maasr. I, 48d bot. אלצ׳. - Tosef. ib. I 1 אילס׳. Ib. III, 14 אילאסרין ed. Zuck. (Var. אליסין).
*אלקולאון, אלקולאין Cant. R. to I, 11 שלמד הקב״ה של בדעתו א׳, a corruption; read; אונקלס שלמד הדריינוס של אחותו בן (עקילס); cmp. Tanh. Mishp. 5. [The entire clause seems tto be a gloss.]
*אלקום (b. h.) a symbolized pr. n.; No-Standing. Y. R. Hash.I, 57a bot. עמו א׳ ומלך but the King (bhe Lord)--- no standing (on his decrees) is with him; he desires not to insist upon his decrees (but permits repentance to set them aside).

אלקטי, איל׳ f. (~~~~~~, sub. ~~~~~~; v. also הילקטי) winding staircase. Tosef. Erub. VIII, 11 (V, end) five compartments לא׳ הפתוחות ed. Zuck. (ed. אלקט) opening towards a common winding staircase. Ib. בהילקטי ואסורין ed. Zuck. (ed. באלקטון, Var. בדיאלקטו corr. acc.) and are forbidden the use of &c.
אלקטית f, pl. אלקטיות (לקט, v. הילקט) stack of grain, shed for stacks in the field. [Comment. fr. קייט summer.] Maasr. III, 7 the stores in והא׳ הבורגנין (Ms. M. אלנקטיות) turrets and sheds in the field are exempt from tithes (until brought home).

אלריא, איל׳ f. (~~~~~) day of rejoicing, both private and public; esp. days of public rjoicings appointed by a new emperor, consisting of games, masguerades &c. Pesik. Sh'mini p. 193b while the King is engaged בא׳ וכ׳ שלו in his hilaria, ask of him what you need. Cant. R.to IV, 4 וכ׳ באלירא עומדין היו לא (corr. acc.) (at Mount Sinai) they did not stand (as) in hilaria, but in awe, trembling &c.
*אלריא a disease; prob. a corruption of אילייא (eile~~, ieus) liac passion, spasm of the abdominal muscles connected with vomiting. Git. 70a א׳ אחזתו מיושב Ar. (ed. דלריא as in the sentence following).
אלתא, אלתא (אלותא) f. ch. (=h. אלה) post, pole, door-post. Targ. Josh. XXIV, 26 (ed. Vien.Iאילנא). -- Pl. (of אלותא) אלוותא. Targ. lIs. VI, 4 אלוות (ed. Vien. אילוות.) B. Bath. 73a באלוותא ליה ומחינן Rashi (ed., sing. אלותא) and we struck it with clubs; v., however, אליתא. Bets. 33b א׳ א׳ לן ויהיב and gave us each several branches (Rashi), v., however, אלותא.
אלתוסבראות m. (על=אל, a. תוס׳, v. תוסברא; cmp. I Chron. XXVII, 25); v. אלי) comes thesaurorum, chief- treasurer. Midr. Till. to Ps. XV magor (his resort, stores) that is שלו א׳ his (the Roman Emperor's) chief treasurer (or plur. treasurers).
