לעס (emp. לעט a. לוש) to chew, masticate. Sabb. XIX, 2 וכ׳ בשיניו לועס one chews (cumin for a plaster) with one s teeth and applies it. Tosef. ib. XII (XIII), 8 לועסין אין וכ׳ you must not chew gum-mastich on the Sabbath. Tosef. Pes. VI, 11 וכ׳ עו ולועס . . למזוג עומד כהשמש (not ללעוס) when the attendant gets up from the ttable to mix the wine, he must close his mouth and chew (the meat of the Passover lamb) until &c. Pes. II, 7 אדם ילעוס לא וכ׳ one must not chew wheat (on Pesah) and put it ou one's wound; a. e. -- Part. pass. לעוס. Y. Ter. VIII, 45b bot., v. בלע.

לפיד m (b. h.; cmp. לפס) a pot in which light is carried (v. Maim. too Kel. II, 8 a. Ar. s. v.); torch. Kel. II, 8 הל (R. S. לפוד) the light-pot -- Midr. Till. to Ps. LIII(ref. to Gen. XV, 17) וכ׳ תורה אלא ל׳ ואין torch means the Torah &c. (with ref. to Ex. XX, 18); a. e. -- Pl. לפידים. Snh. 108b (ref. to לפיד, Job XII, 5) words כל׳ קשים שהם as hard as light-pots. -- Trnsf. ltghtning, flasb. -- Pl. as ab. Mekh. לפיד ch. same. Gen. R. s. 30 (ref. to לפיד, Job XII, 5) תae t ליה כרו אמרין תמן (Ar. לפד) there (in certain places) they say (instead of) he has a crier (hat walks before him); he has a torclh' (carried before him), i. e. he is a. distinguished person.

לפלופא ch. (preced.) pulp, soft portion of cabbage. Y. Ter. X, 47 bot. לפלופפה והב איבה מן סב take (for thyself) from its trunk and give (as T'rumah) its pulp.

לפסא ch. same. Y. Peah VIII, 20d bot. גוא מן תקניה ל׳ gave the T'rumah out of the stew-pot. Ib. VII, 20a bot. חנניה דכפר לפיסא (read; ליפסא; Keth. 11 2a כפר אילפס הינו) the pot of K'far H. (wwhich was very large). Ib. VIII, 21a bot. וכ׳ הוא ל׳ מן . . . . . עיקר does not the dish originally come out of the (earthen) pot? Eat (now) of it, v. לפצא. -- Pl. לפסיא. Targ. Y. I Num. לפף (cmp. לפי) to cling to, to clasp. Tanh. B'har 3 (ref. to וילפת, Ruth III, 8) לפפתו she clasped him; Ruth R. to l. c. כחזזית לפפתו (some ed. לפתתו), v. חזזית. Pi. לפק 1) same. Bekh. 41a (interpret. ילפת) שמלפפת וכ׳ והולכת it continues to cling (to the body) to the day of death, v. supra. Sot. 3b (play on ילפתו, Job VI, 18) וכ׳ לפניו והולכת מלפפתו (sin) clings to him and goes be- fore hhim on the day of judgment. - 2) to wrap, simathe. Sabb. 129b bot. וכ׳ הוולד את מלפפין you maay swathe a. new-born child on the Sabbath. -- Part. pass. מלופף; f. מלופפת. Deut.
