סולמא, סולמאch. same, ladder. Targ. Gen. XXVII, 12. (O. ed. Vien. סלמא; oth. ed. סול׳). -- Y. R. Hash. II, 58a, v. הפך. Y. M. Kat.I, end, 81a דסולמיה עוקא איתבר a round of his ladder broke; a. e. - Succ. 53b דפרת ס׳ (Rashi סולמי pl.; Ms. M. 2 סולמות) the upper part (the source) of the Euphrates. - Pl. סולמיא, סולמיה, סולמי. סולתנית, (סולתנות) f.(denom. o סולת) [fshfried with flour,] a smal fish believed to grow scales on reaching a certain age (cmp. אפיין). Hull. 66a; Ab. Zar. 39a וכ׳ הס׳ כגון . לו אין one that has no scales now but will grow them after a time, as, for instance, the sultanith &c,. Ib., expl. חילק I. (Ar. סלת׳).

סום I (v. שום) to attach, place; to tie together. Tosef. Shebi. I, 11 וכ׳ הגפנים את סמין אין Var. ed. Zuck. (text סימין אף; oth. ed. סכין אין) you must not bind the grape- vines in the Sabbatical year. Pi. סיים 1) same. Cant. R. to VII, 1 (ref. to שולמית ib., a. Num. VI, 26) וכ׳ שלום לה שמסיימים אומה a nation to which peace is assigned every day; (Gen. R. s. 66 שהכהנים וכ׳ שלום לה משימין). -- 2) to mark, namme (cmp. ששם, שום); to distinguish. Y. Peah VII, beg. 20a מסיימו הדקל the neighboring palm-tree serves as a mark for it (that the owner did not forget it); וכ׳ מסיים זה they mark each other (cmp. Mish. ib. 1 שם לו שיש). Deut. R. s. 7 סיימני וכ׳ המדינה בתוך give me some distinction in the country, (by which to show) that Iam thy son. Y. Ber. V, end, 9d' וכ׳ באותה וסיימו and they noted (the time when he said it), at that very time he (the patient) asked for food. Y. Meg. I, 71d וכ׳ חכמים אותן וסיימו the scholars noted them (took their names &c., in order to be able to observe their career), and all of them turned out great men; Gen. R. s. 1. Y. Dem. V, 24c bot. סיימתי . . . ומסים and he makes a mark (on the pile), and says to the priest, so far I have marked (as tithe); a. fr. -- [Gen. R. s. 42 end עצמך את ומסיים, v. סוף II. ]-- Part. pass. מסויים, מסוים; f. מסוימת &c. Y. Peah l. c. בדעתו מס׳ היה if it (the olive or the sheat lett behind) was noted in his mind (so that he coild identify it), מס׳ הוא כאילו it is to be considered as if it were marked (by a special name, locality &c.). B. Bath. 54a במצריה המס׳ שדה a field definable by its boundaries. Y. Yeb. XV, 15a מס׳ אדם a well-known man. Y. Shek. I, 46b top המס׳ דבר an object which bears the name of its owner. Gen. R. s. 44 מס׳ הללו איים מה וכ׳ בים as the islands are distinguishable in the sea, so were Abraham and Shem distinguished in the world; a. fr. -- 3) to tie up; to flnish, wind up, opp. פתח. Arakh. 10b באבוב ומסיים בחליל פתח the Mishnah begins with halil and ends with abbub Ber. 10a באשרי וס׳ באשרי בה פתח he began it (the psalm) with ashre and closed it with ashre; a. fr. - Part. pass. as ab. Y. Bets. I, beg. 60a בהמה מס׳ לחדשים יולדת every animal gives birth after a certain number of complete months, opp. למקוטעין counting a fraction of the last month as a whole month. Nithpa. נסתיים 1) to be marked, defined. Y. Ter. III, 42b top וכ׳ שנסתיימה מקום where the T'rumah of one pile was marked, there (in the corresponding place) the T'rumah of the other pile was meant to be dedicated. Y. Shebi. VIII, 38a וכ׳ לו ונסתיימה .. שהוא זה iff one used a basket for measuring and after using it two or three times knew exactly how much it contained; a. e. - 2) to be finished, oncluded. B. Bath. 125b בגדולים נפתח זה דבר וכ׳ ו׳ this subject was opened by great men and has been concluded by small men.

Gitt. lI c. וכ׳ למסיימא בעא he wanted to put on the other shoe. Taan. 12b וכ׳ מסנייהו דמסיימי that they wear their shoes and come to the fast--meeting. Zar. 16b, a. e. שמעתתא חסתיים ומינך מינאי this tradition will be named from myself and from thee. -- 2) to be concluded, proved. Sabb. 31b וע׳ דרר תסתיים it can be conclusively proved that it was R. . . who said &c.; תסתיים it is proved.
