סכנה f. (סכן II) trouble, persecution, danger. Keth. 3b ואילן זמס׳ and since the days of dapger (the Hadrianic persecution when the Romans enforced the jus primae noctis). Ib. הוא אונס ס׳ האי you call that risk of life (for religion's sake)? This is rather assault (which no woman is bound to sacrifice her life in resisting). Ib. ׳p לידי ואתיין . צנועות דיכא מששום because there are chaste women who would rather suffer death, and their lives might be endangered. סכסךI (b. h.; Pilp. ofסכך I) 1) to be caught; to stick. Nidd. 25b וכ׳ מסכססך אם . . מביא one takes a chip with a. smooth head and introduces it at the place of the genitals (of a miscarried foetus), and if it gets caught (that it can proceed no farther), it is sure to be a male foetus. -- 2) to entangle, snare. Gen. R. s. 67 וכ׳ ומסכסכן ועופות and (he hunted) birds and ensnared them, but an angel came and freed them; Yalk. Prov. 950. -- Part. f מסכסכת (sub. סכין) a slaughtering knife having an indentation whicbh. catches the nail passing in one direction, contrad. to אאוגרת which catches the nail in either direction. סכסך II (transpos. of כסכס; cmp. געגע; v. כסס) to chew, nibble; (of fire, cmp. לחך) to graze, singe, maake brittle. Sabb. 21a בהן מסכסכת האור the fame nibbles at them (producing sputtering sparlks). B. Kam. 6a top אאבניו סבסכהhelapping fire attacked his neighbor's stones; (Y. ib. II, 5c top סיפספה). Tosef. ib. VI, 23 מסכסכת היתה אאם והולכת if the fire went on lapping, opp. קפצה it skipped. Hag. 15b וכ׳ וסכסכה אש ירדה (Ms. M. 2 סבבה; v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 9) fire came down and lapped Rabbi's chair.
סכסן m. (= סכסכן, v. סכך I a. סכסך I) of confused mind; fool. Snh. 100b (cit. fr. Ben Sira) ס׳ עבדקן (Ms. M. סעיס; Rashi to B. Bath. 74a סיסן) a thick-bearded person has a confused mind, opp. קורטמן.
