Ber. II, end, 5d וכ׳ פתר אנא יכיל (= למפתר) I can explain this in agreement with the opinion of &c. Pesik. Shek., p. 10b וכ׳ בדואג קרא פתרין ריבנן and the Rabbis explain this verse (Ps. III, 3) as a reference to Doeg &c.; a. fr. Pa. פתר to mollify, steep (in water &c.). Y. B. Mets. IV, end, 9d וכ׳ מפתר הוה, v. סרדותא.
פתר II, פתרא פי׳ I m. (preced.) solution, inter- pretation. Y. Ber. I, 2a bot., a. fr. וכ׳ לה פ׳ there is an expplanation for it (you can meet this difficulty by saying), that it refers &c. Tam. 32a ׳ לה אין דא מילתא this problem is insolvable. Yeb. 97b [read with Ar.) פ׳ סתר לכו נישל we shall ask you sommething too mysterious for solution. Y. Shebu. I, 32c sq. חורן פ׳ לה פתר offered a different solution for it. Y. Dem. VII, end, 26c כהדין אלא לך אין קדמיא פי׳ there is nothing left to thee but to agree with the first interpretation. Y. Naz. V, 53d bot. כפתרה ירריה דר׳ as R. J. has explained it; a. fr. -- Pl. פתרין, פתרייא, פתרייה, פי׳. Y. Erub. IV, end, 22a פ׳ תרין לה פתר offered two explanations. Y. Peah IV, 18b top לה פתר פ׳ כאילין he explained it in accordance with those ex- planations (given above); Y. Gitt. VIII, 49c top פתרייתא (corr. acc.).
*פתרא, פי׳ II m. (cmp. פתורא I. a. פתיא II) a certain kin d of wine vvessel. --- Pl. פתרייא, שי׳. Y. Ab. Zar. II, 441c top רברבייא פ׳ באילין concerning those large vessels (used by gentiles).
*פתרון I m. (cmp. preced.) plate, tablet, merchant's dish (in which the various coins are arranged). Tanh. Ki Thissa, ed. Bub. 1 (expl. הסהר אגן, Cant. VII, 3, with play on סהר and סחר) וכ׳ פרגמטיא של פ׳ the plate used in business, whatever one needs, comes out of it; [read;] פ׳ לשון אלא אגן הלשון ואין and the word aggan means dish (ref. to Ex. XXIV, 6); Yalk. Cant. 992 פתרין.
פתרון II m. (b. h.; פתר) interpretation. Ber. 55b כל וכ׳ חלומו ופ׳ אחד each was shown his own dream and the interpretation of the other man's dream. Gen. R. s. S9; a. e.
