צור III m. (preced. wds.) [twist,] דקל צ׳ band made of palmbark (cmp. נצר III). -- Pl. constr. צורי. Sabb. 90b שתים דקל צ׳ (Ms. M. צוארי; Ar. צרי) he who carries palm- bands abroad (on the Sabbath), has transgressed the law by carrying two strips.

צור (b. h.) pr. n. pl. Tyre in Phenicia. Gen. צורבא m. (צרב) mark of a burn, scab; מרבנן צ׳ one that has caught fire by associating with Rabbis (cmp. Ab. II, 10); a student of rabbinical lore. Meg. 28b מר׳ צ׳ אי וכ׳ הוא if he is a rabbinical scholar, let him recite a Halakhah, contrad. fr. תנא one who knows Mishnah. Taan. 4a, v. פרצידא. Ib. וכ׳ דרתח מר׳ צ׳ האי if a young student is hot (of temper), it is the learning that heats him. Keth. 105b וכ׳ דמרחמין מר׳ צ׳ ההוא if a student is popular ...; it is not because he is superior to others, but because he does not reprove the people &c. Sabb. 23b; a. fr.

צורה f. (b. h.; צור) 1) form, shape, figure; painting. Y. Sabb. VII, 10d צ׳ כלי a vessel with raised figures, v. גדל II. Y. Shebi. VIII, 38a top [read;] שנתלקלה תבשיל צורתו a dish that has become defaced (looking repulsive). Tosef. Zeb. VII, 6 צורתה תעבר; Pes. VII, 9, a. e. צוותו תעובר let its appearance be gone, i. e. wait until the fesh looks disfigured by beginning decay. Nidd. 25b פנים צורת the shape of a face. B. Bath. 54a וכ׳ צ׳ הצר if one draws a. figure in the ground (or on the wall) of tthe estate of a deceased proselyte (as a symbol of possession). Gen. R. s. 73 צורתן שנשתנה עד until their features had changed (beyond recognition). Num. R. s. 9, beg. הולד צורת the features of the child (born in adultery); הנואף צ׳ the features of the adulterer. Ab. R. s. 24, beg. (ref. to Is. XXIX, 16) גדול ליוצרה צ׳ שמדמין . . . great (bold) is the power of the prophets who represent the Creator under the form of the creature (by ref. to Dan. VIII, ; Ez. צורך, צרךm. (b. h.; צרך) need, necessity. M. Kat. II, 4 המועד לצ׳ if required for use during the festival; לצ׳ המוכר if the seller is in need of money. Pes. 5b we do not say, לצ׳ שלא . . לצ׳ . . . והותרה הואיל since lighting a fire is permitted (on the Holy Day) for the need of the day, it mny also be permitted where it is not needed for the day. Y. Naz. III, beg. 54c יצאת לצ׳ הבערה the pro- hibition to start a fire on the Sabbath (Ex. XXXV, 3) is specified for a purpose (for interpretation). Sabb. 131b גבוה צ׳ needed for the altar (v. גבוה). Bets. 21b אדם עושה בפת צרכו כל man may use a loaf of bread for whatever he may need (not only for eating); Ber. 50b צרכיו (pl.). Snh. 88b צרכן כל שמשו שלא who had not attended their teachers sufficiently; Y. ib. I, 19c כצורכן; a. v. fr. -Euphe-- misms; Y. Keth. Ber. 46b סעודה צ׳ the requirements of a meal. Sabb. XIX, 2 (l133a, sq.) כל מילה צ׳ all preparations needed for circumcision. Shek. IV, 7 עולות לצ׳ ימכרו (Y. ed. לצריכי) shall be sold for the purposes of (to buy with the money realized) burnt-offer-- ings. Bets. 28b צרביכם לכל לכם for you (Ex. XII, 16), for all your needs of the day. Y. Ber. V, 9b bot. צרכיו שואל וכ׳ inserts the prayer for his individual needs in the benediction Hearer of Prayers'. Lev. R. s. 34, end (ref. to Is. LVVIII, 13) בשבת צרכיו לתבוע . . מכאן from tthis we learn that man must not pray for his individual wants on the Sabbath; a. fr. -- Y. Hag. II, 78a top עמה צרכיו עשה had marital connection with her, v. supra. Nidd. IX, 1 צרכיה עושה urinated. Ib. 2 צרכיהן. Yalk.
