צפורה, ציפ׳ (b. h. פרהt) pr. n. f. Zipporah (Bird), wife of Moses. M. Kat. 16b (ref. to Num. XII, 1) כושית וכי וכ׳ צ׳ והלא שמה was her name Kushith ? Was not Z. her name? &c. Ex. R. s. I כציפור . . . צ׳ שמה נקרא she was named Zipporah (bird), because she sped like a bird (to bring Moses to her father's house); a. e.

צפורן, ציפ׳ c. (b. h. צפרן; v. אפר I) 1) nail (of finger or toi), talon (of a bird). Mikv. IX, 2; 4. Gen. R. s. 20, end כצ׳ היו חלקים they were as smooth as a nail, Yalk, ib. 34. Koh. R. to VI, 7 הושט מתוך כצ׳ (the departure of the soul from the body is) like getting a nail out of the gullet, v. ציפורי I; a. fr. --Gen. R. s. 45 וכ׳ ולא אבות של ציפרנן rather a nail of the fathers than the belly of the sons, i. e. the older generations were better than the latter; Yoma 9b וכ׳ צפורנן טובה. -- Da. צפורניים, צפר׳,צפורנים, צי׳. צפחת f. (צפח; v. ציפוחא) a tenacious batter dripped on a hot griddle, a sort of waffe. Makhsh. V, 9 מן חוץ והצ׳ הזיפין דבש except the connected flow (נצוק) of thick honey or of a batter; [Maim., taking זיפין a. כ׳ as pr. n. l., except the flow of honey from Zifin or lIsappahath, v. זיף II, III]; Naz. 50a והצפיחית (= b. h. צפיהת); Sot. 48b והצפיחים. - [ror b. h. פחת, pitcher, cmp. טפיח.].
צפי, צפה (b. h.; cmp. ציף) [to shine; cmp. צוץ,] to look, esp.to look into distances of'space or ttme; to foresee; to have a vision. Gitt. 58a, v. צפנת. Meg. 24b צפו הרבה וכ׳ למרכבה Ms. M. (ed. במ׳ לדרוש צפו, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) maoy looked out for the Merkabah (v. מרכבה), and never lived to see it; (ed. hoped to be able to preach on the Merkabah; Tosef. ib. IIIIV), 28 במ׳ דרשו הרבה). Gen. R. s. 79 וכ׳ הקדש ברוח . צ׳ R. S. b. Y. saw by means of the spirit of holiness (inspiration) &c.; Y. Shebi. IX, 38d; Koh. R. to X, 8; Pesik. Vayhi, p. 90a. II (III), 12 [belonging to 13) וכ׳ הרואה צופה איזהו who is called a tsofeh (a pilgrim that sees Jerusalem)? He who sees it and never loses it out of sight again. Meg. 14a (expl. צופים הרמתים, ISam.
