Murchison, Sir Roderick Impey, Bart., created D.C.L. 9 June, 1853 (son of Kenneth M., of Taradale, Ross-shire), the distinguished geologist, director-general of the Geological Survey of the United Kingdom 1855, established the Silurian and Devonian systems, served in the Peninsular war 1808-9, captain 6th dragoons, F.G.S. 1825, president Royal Society 1826, and four times president of the Geological Society, president of the Geographical Society 1862-71, knighted 11 Feb., 1846, president of the British Association 1846, created M.A. from Trinity Coll., Cambridge, 1847, and LL.D. 1861, K.C.B. 1863, created a baronet 22 Jan., 1866, died 22 Oct., 1871.
