Through the wide world,—I seek, but do not find;
Tiger-like, serpent-like is man, and aye,
One of the brood the devil pastureth,
Yet, deignest Thou to sojourn in the world,
Only a human soul is Thine abode,
As Luther, man and servitor of God,
Or Melanchthon, who is Thy wisdom’s bee.
Thou shouldest come beneath my roof. But Thou,

Most wondrous moments do I feel that Thou
Dost take Thine case amid the chamber of
My spirit with mine eyes Thou gazest. Thou
