A Mood

NEVER so cerily yet
Soughed my native wood:
I should weep, I should weep
If I but could.

There is mockery in the twilight
Beneath each heavy bough.
The evening seems to drag its broken wings
Over the earth now.

And what is that laughter in the leafage,
And what is that dry chuckling sound?
With seven-league strides, O my soul,
Whither are you bound?
Once Again Shall We Return (1900)
