Hostess, Give Me Wine, I Pray

HOSTESS, give me wine, I pray,
From Debreczin I took my way;
By hidden path-ways I did fare,
Lo, these shackles that I bear.

’Twas my masters gave me these;
They pinioned fast my hands and knees,
That when gleamed the star of morn
I to the gallows might be borne.

Weakly were the shackles blended,
By my sinews they were rended.
Wherefore are such gyves my plight,
For scanty bread and scanty right?

The gypsy from these gyves shall make
A sharp-edged axe; the day shall break
When we ourselves with spurs shall clank
Like the man of lofty rank.
