The Willow
Thus his youthful spouse did greet:
Thou in all things wert sincere.
One thing ne’er thou let’st me hear,
Only one thing brings me dread.
With what slumber dost thou rest?
Like a corpse thou art at night.
Nor is trace of breathing heard.
E’en as if to dust it came.
Our young child, with bitter weeping.
Doth some sickness thee enfold?
Let wise counsel be thine aid.
Thou perchance by one art healed.
A potent spell can never fail.
That ships in the raging storm can shield.
Rocks can shelter, dragons slay.
A potent spell thy weal can send.”
Let no vain word trouble thee.
To no balm will yield on earth.
At man’s word will not abate.
Ever ’neath God’s might am I.
Who protects me night by night.
My spirit back to me is borne.
For ’twas thus by God decreed.”
For thy husband guards his thought.”
Water pours from bowl to bowl.
The husband for her aid doth go.
Know’st what each has to await.
Where the Maid of Death is fleeing.
What is with my bride amiss?
Like a corpse she lies at night.
Ne’er a trace of breathing heard.
E’en as if to dust it came.”
Since her life but half is led?
At night her soul dwells in a tree.
Thou find’st a willow with shining bark.
The spirit of thy bride is there.”
That with a willow she might abide.
The willow in the earth decay.”
From the root the willow felled.
From the depths a murmur passed.
As of a mother whose end is nigh.
Who to her infant turns her face.
Wherefore sings the knell its song?
As by a sickle smitten sore.
Till like a tree hewn down she fell.
And to her infant turned her face.”
My bride, unwitting, I laid low.
My child of mother’s care bereft.
Why did’st bring me to this plight?
What shall I do unto thee?”
And my yellow bough be sawn.
And thereof a cradle make.
That the poor mite may not weep.
He shall find his mother’s care.
That no evil them betide.
Frame a reed-pipe for his own.
To his mother answering.”
