Second President of the United States (1797 – 1801), with Thomas Jefferson, succeeding George Washington; succeeded by Jefferson. First Vice President (1789 - 1797), with Washington; succeeded by Jefferson. Ambassador to Great Britain (1785 - 1788), Ambassador to the Netherlands (1782 - 1788). Father of sixth United States President John Quincy Adams.
