Works unpublished during Chopin's lifetime[edit]

From the introduction to this updated edition of a 1969 collection (available to borrow through the Internet Archive), it seems that Chopin was reluctant to publish much of her material. I found this while seeking information about "A Little Free-Mulatto" to determine its copyright status. That story is specifically mentioned in the introduction. I'm uncertain what this tells us about copyright; if it's true the story was never published, would the 1969 publication (or any intervening publication) fix the copyright date, keeping a story such as this under copyright until 2047? The Missouri Historical Society seems to have positively determined that it is in the public domain in the U.S., so for the moment I'll tag the story accordingly; but further consideration may be in order. -Pete (talk) 13:50, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
