This was a series of short stories by Doyle. The first 3 appeared in Pearson's Magazine and McClure's Magazine in 1897, and were first collected in The Green Flag and Other Stories of War and Sport in 1900

A fourth story "The Blighting of Sharkey" was first published in Pearson's Magazine in April 1911, with seemingly no contemporary American magazine publication. It was first collected in The Last Galley in 1911.

All four stories first appeared together in Tales of Pirates and Blue Water in 1922
