BARODA, SIR SAYAJI RAO III MAHARAJA GAEKWAR SHAMSHIR BAHADUR OF (1863–)
Maharaja: born March 10, 1863: descended from the founders of the Baroda dynasty: adopted on May 27, 1875, by Jamnabai, widow of the Gaekwar Khandi Rao: educated at the Maharaja's School at Baroda: was installed, 1875: during his minority, there was a Council of Regency under a British officer and Raja Sir Tanjore Madhava Rao K.C.S.I. (q.v.): on Dec. 28, 1881, he was given the administration of the State: made G.C.S.I. in 1887: an enlightened ruler, and holds advanced views on social questions: he has several times visited Europe.
