Amending Civil Service Rules to Include All Customs Houses in Classified Service

Signed by President William McKinley Tuesday, July 27, 1897

Amends Executive Order 89, May 6, 1896. Previously, Customs Houses with fewer than five employees were not subject to civil service rules.

Amendment to Rule III.

Amend Rule III, section 3, by striking out all after the word "district," in the third line, so that, as amended, the section will read:

The Custom-House Service shall include such officers and employees as have been, or may hereafter be, classified under the civil-service act, who are serving in any customs district.
