| Description |
English: Origin of Plasmas in the Earth's Neighborhood, 05. Before the 1950's, Earth's space environment was considered a near-vacuum; the extension of Earth's magnetic field would resemble the field of a simple bar magnet (upper left). However, spacecraft quickly made dramatic discoveries such as the belt of energetic charged particles (upper right), and the hot, supersonic solar wind that fills interplanetary space and distorts the magnetosphere. |
