À gauche un tas de légumes, à droite un café (d'après son enseigne) où les gens semblent se battre à coups de canne ; devant lui, un groupe composé d'une vieille mendiante qui tend la main, une femme qui tente de se réchauffer au-dessus d'un maigre feu de planches, deux couples : l'un s'embrasse, la jeune femme de l'autre est serrée de près par un homme en perruque (un juge ?) ; au centre, marchant vers la droite, une grande femme digne et raide, suivie d'un jeune garçon transi en habit (un serviteur ? il porte un livre et un vêtement plié sous le bras
