Drop-initial issues[edit]

  • For single-letter words (e.g., "I" or "A" and often "O"), place a {{gap}} with a 5px width directly after the initial to be "dropped" to create a space between the two words (otherwise, no space will be rendered):
{{block center/s}}
{{c|MAN}}
<poem>{{dropinitial|I{{gap|5px}}|1.5em}} WAS born as free as the silvery light...

MAN

I WAS born as free as the silvery light...

  • To indent a {{dropinitial}}, place a {{gap}} directly before the initial to be indented:
{{block center/s}}
{{c|CORA}}
{{c|{{smaller|I}}}}
<poem>{{dropinitial|{{gap}}W|1.5em}}HEN through thy arching aisles,
         O Nature, I perceive
What brooding stillness fills the lonesome choirs
Where, heaven'd late, thy sweet musicians sung...

I

WHEN through thy arching aisles,
         O Nature, I perceive
What brooding stillness fills the lonesome choirs
Where, heaven'd late, thy sweet musicians sung...

  • If you need to manually adjust the {{gap}} length, you can try:
{{block center/s}}
{{c|CORA}}
{{c|{{smaller|I}}}}
<poem>{{dropinitial|{{gap|.5em}}W|1.5em}}HEN through thy arching aisles,
         O Nature, I perceive
What brooding stillness fills the lonesome choirs
Where, heaven'd late, thy sweet musicians sung...

I

WHEN through thy arching aisles,
         O Nature, I perceive
What brooding stillness fills the lonesome choirs
Where, heaven'd late, thy sweet musicians sung...

Text-wrapping issues[edit]

  • I have decided to reduce the drop-initial font size to 1.5em instead of 2... This keeps the text-wrapping aligned correctly... But if the issue ever comes up otherwise,:

Sometimes the {{drop initial}} template affects the alignment in either the first or second line of the poem:

{{block center/s}}
{{c|ROUEN: IN THE PRISON OF </br>JOAN OF ARC}}
<poem>{{drop initial|S|2em}}HE laid her head upon the straw,
    She who had crowned a king of France,
And angel shapes, whom no man saw,
    For her deliverance...</poem>{{block center/e}}
  • If the following is rendered:

SHE laid her head upon the straw,
    She who had crowned a king of France,
And angel shapes, whom no man saw,
    For her deliverance...

  • Then make the following width adjustment:
{{block center/s|width=275px}}
{{c|ROUEN: IN THE PRISON OF </br>JOAN OF ARC}}
<poem>{{drop initial|S|2em}}HE laid her head upon the straw,
    She who had crowned a king of France,
And angel shapes, whom no man saw,
    For her deliverance...</poem>{{block center/e}}

Note: when deciding what width to use, I generally find the minimum pixel width first, and then increase that number by 50px for "wiggle room."

SHE laid her head upon the straw,
    She who had crowned a king of France,
And angel shapes, whom no man saw,
    For her deliverance...
