Problems with words

In general I have followed the philosophy that the primary purpose of this document is as a reference, and thus that faithful reproduction of the original text is slightly secondary to that.

• The words displayed are the ‘best’ reproduction of the scanned text.
• Where there are spelling errors in the scanned text they are corrected using SIC e.g.

{{SIC|Comanding|Commanding}} N.W. district, 1902-04;

• Where there are errors in the names of people or places these have been checked wherever possible - usually on Google Maps, Wikipedia or one of the main genealogical sites. If the correction can be verified then these have been corrected using SIC e.g.

19, {{SIC|Glashow|Glasgow}} Gardens, South Kensington, S.W.

or

Constance {{SIC|Gwenf Frend|Gwenffrwd}}, ''d''. of late Rev. Thomas Foulkes, 1876.

• Where there are identified errors in the names of entries, then the correct name is used in the index but the erroneous name is show in the body of the entry, again corrected with SIC e.g.

• Errors in other words have been corrected using SIC when there is an obvious spelling mistake (after making allowance for 1915 spellings) or a verifiable error in a technical term.

Punctuation and formatting

Following the philosophy above the primary aim of punctuation has been clarity and consistency rather than faithful reproduction. With punctuation there is a further complication that in the scanned images the tails of commas and semi-colons have faded away leaving them looking like stops and colons.

• All initials in peoples names are separated by spaces, in all other cases - qualifications, titles, places, etc. - the spaces are omitted e.g.

  Stone, J. H., M.A., F.R.H.S., C.I.E.. 

• Lists of qualifications are separated by commas
• Titles involving places names are divided by a semi-colon e.g.

  Singrauli, Raja of; Rudra Pratap Singh

• Abbreviations like s for son, d for daughter, etc. are show in italics followed by a stop e.g.

  ''d''. of late Rev. Thomas Foulkes, 1876.

• Similarly the structural markers - educ:, Publications:, Address:, Clubs:, etc. are shown in italics followed by a colon e.g.

   ''Address'': Government House, Madras.

• Semi-colons are used to sub-divide compound lists

Q.C., 1892; Bencher, 1896; Puisne Judge, High Court, Calcutta, 1898-1901; 
Chief Justice, High Court, North West Provinces, 1901-1911; 
Chairman, U.P. Famine Committee, 1901-07;

• Bold text is used as in the original.
• Curly quotes ‘xxx’ & “xxx” are used in the text in preference to straight quotes 'xxx' & "xxx".

Corrections to the text

In adding corrections I have taken the view that there are two main classes of user: those who are interested in the original text; and, probably the majority, who are interested primarily in the biographical content. I have therefore sought to preserve the original text and to add corrections wherever possible. Corrections are mainly of the following types:

• Obvious spelling errors e.g. M.A. {{SIC|Contab|Cantab}} or {{SIC|Asistant|Assistant}} are corrected with sic (though not if they spelling used might have been correct at the time of writing e.g. Seapoy vs Sepoy).
• Errors in the names of people e.g. {{SIC|Parl von Cibra|Karl von Bibra}} where I have been able to verify the correct name from another source: usually Wikipedia or one of the genealogy or family history sites. Note that in most cases this limits corrections to European names. Please see the note on Errors in Names below when the change is in the name of the section.
• Errors in the names of places, e.g. {{SIC|Dresdon|Dresden}}, where I can verify or the error is obvious.
• I have not attempted to preserve apparent errors in punctuation or in printing. There are many cases where in the printing the tails of commas and semi-colons are lost.
• Similarly the descender on the letter y is often missing, giving e.g. secretarv, Hverabad; these have been corrected without comment.
• Other type-setting errors, usually from misplaced letters in the font trays, e.g. Hakim-ud-{{SIC|Danla|Daula}}have been corrected as shown here.

Note: all the examples here were found on one page.

• Please keep section tags for each of these references.
• Link the See entry to its counterpart if it exists:

Errors in Names

There are several errors in names either through type-setting or mis-transcription. Where I can verify these from another source they have been corrected thus:

• The original version is left in the Source page with sic used to show the correct version; the section name uses the correct version.

• If the correct name is in a different alphabetic location e.g. Keir Hardi & Hardie, Keir then add a new reference in the index at the correct location to help searchers plus the corrected reference as above in the incorrect location.

Links to Names

There are three main kinds of Name links in the text, as I have found no practical way to combine them I have used this order of priority.

• Links to Wikipedia: if a Wikipedia article for the same person exists this is linked as the first choice following the premise that most users are looking for biographical information.
• Author Links: if there are named publications in the entry and no Wikipedia entry has been found, then an author link is added.
• Internal links: there are relatively few of these, though I suspect that there are more to be found, and they only apply in the body of the text. They have been added if no Wikipedia link has been found.
