@Languageseeker: as a redundant index, it'll get deleted once it's not referenced anywhere (it's actually used in some template docs). I know the IA source only provides PDF, but I don't have the tools to fix up or regenerate a PDF text layer, so it's more expedient to just regenerate a DJVU from JP2s so the MC can have an OCR layer that loads properly (also it thumbnails like 10x faster). Standard Dropcaps

Many of the articles in The Strand Magazine use the same set of dropcap initials at the start of each article. I've gone through this volume and put a good example of each one on Wikimedia Commons. An article that begins 'There' can be marked up as

{{di|T|image=Strand Magazine - Initial T.png|imgsize=60px}}HERE

and similarly for any other starting letter. If the article uses its own special initial letter than that will have to be dealt with individually as normal.

Reviewing the first three volumes has given me every letter except Q, X and Z. If you happen to see one of these in a later volume, let me know and I'll extract the image. Qq1122qq (talk) 15:26, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

Using this as my intro to Templates, you can now create a standard Strand Magazine dropcap initial using

{{Strand di|T}}

Illustrations

Dropcaps and illustrations have been added to all pages for Issue 2, so they are ready for proofreading. For the other issues in this volume, I am planning on uploading the illustrations, but will list the filenames of the illustrations here, rather than manually creating the image tags on every page. For consistency, I have been using this tag for every image (aside from those in the 'photographs of celebrities' pages, the formatting of which I'm still not completely happy with:

For a full-width illustration, 'width' is 500px and 'align' is center. For half-width illustrations, 'width' is generally 300px, and 'align' can be 'left', 'right', or 'center'. Everything seems to be working fine except for the 'Portraits of Celebrities' section, where the floating images seem to be confusing the initial drop caps.Qq1122qq (talk) 15:11, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

For No. 3. (March 1891), all the pages have been created, and links to illustrations inserted when required.

'Portraits of Celebrities'

The one section which is a pain to format is the 'Portraits of Celebrities at Various Times of their Lives', which often has a gallery of 4 or 5 images on the same page.

Note that I generally move the heading (the name of the celebrity) to the top of the page, then put the images, and then the text.

In general I have been using floats as above for the pages with a couple of images, but these do not play well with the drop-caps, so for the more complicated pages I have been using tables. Here is a good example of the table formatting I have been using -- [[1]]. The table part of this looks like this:
