Death of noted Sligo Man
Major Charles Kean O'Hara, whose death has occurred at Annaghmore, Collooney, Co. Sligo, at the age of 87, was a member of one of the most distinguished families in Ireland. The eldest of a family of ten, he was son of Mr. Charles W. O'Hara, one time Member of Parliament and Justice of the Peace, District Lieutenant and High Sheriff for the county in 1849.
In 1883 Major O'Hara stood as an Independent candidate for Co. Sligo, but was defeated by the Land League nominee.
For many years he was President of the Co. Sligo Agricultural Show Society, at which he was a constant exhibitor and frequent prize-winner he was one of the most prominent breeders of pure-bred Shorthorn cattle in the west and was a member of the Irish Shorthorn Breeders' Association and the R.D.S. An expert horseman, he led the famous Sligo polo team which gained renown at the turn of the century, and won most of the trophies polo tournaments had to offer. On three occasions he was selected to represent his county in matches against England.
