This is the first edition, retracted and suppressed by its publishers. The book was re-issued later the same year, with some changes, under the title The Revolt of Islam. The incestuous relationship between Laon and Cythna is softened to one between adopted siblings, and the critique of religion is couched in vaguer terms.

"In the stanza of Spenser" refers to Spenserian stanza, first used by Edmund Spenser in The Faerie Queene.
