De Villiers, Sir John Henry, K.C.M.G., 1882, chief justice of Cape of Good Hope and president of the legislative council of that colony since 1874, attorney-general 1872-4, knighted 4 Oct., 1877, a student of the Inner Temple 5 June, 1863 (then aged 20), called to the bar 17 Nov., 1865 (2nd son of Charles O. de Villiers, Esq., of the Paarl, Cape of Good Hope); born 9 June, 1843; married 18 May, 1871, Aletta, dau. of J. P. Jordan, Esq., of Worcester (see Foster's Baronetage).
