תפוח m. (b. h.; תפה I) [round;; 1) apple; apple tree. Kil. I, 4 וכ׳ והחזרד הה׳ the apple and the crab-apple - although resembling each other, areheterogeneousc(כלאיס). Cant. R. to VIII, 5 וכ׳ עושה זה ת׳ מה as the apple tree brings forth fruit in Sivan, so the Law was given in Sivan. Ib. וכ׳ מוציא זה ות׳ . . . אילן כל every other tree produces first its leaves, and then its fruit (buds), but the apple tree produces its buds first, and then its leaves; even so Israel advanced doing to hearing; Sabb. 88a; Oant. R. to II, 3. Ib. וכ׳ איסר בו נותן אתה זה ת׳ מה (not איסור) as the apple, for which you pay an lsar and whose scent you enjoy many times, so &c. Num. R. s. 19 ו (expl. הר ההר, Num. *תפוס m. (תפס) a piece of wood fastened to a saddle, which is grasped on mounting (Rashi). Erub. 27a (ed. Sonc. תפות, v. Rabb. D. S. a.l. note 9); Tosef. Kel. B. Bath. II, 7 תופס ed. Zuck. (oth. ed. תופו׳; R. S. to Kel. XXIII, 2 תפית); v. תפית.
תפוסה, תפושה f. (תפס) 1) part. pass. of תפס, .. v.- 2) seiעing, possession; הבית תפוסת that mhich belongs to the house, estate (before division among heirs). B. Bath. 137b הבית בת׳ . . . האחין if brothers acquire an Ethrog out of the estate. Gen. R. s. 75 מתפיסת כלום . . תאמר אל הבית say not, when he (Jacob) went out . . ., he took with him something that belonged to the (paternal) estate; a. e. -- Esp. earth surrounding a buried corpse, wwhich belongs to the dead, and must be taken along when transferred. תפח I (Tafel of נפ־) to be blown up, swell. Pes. III, 4 (48b), v. לטש. Sabb. 91a וכ׳ ותפחה . . . הוציא if he carried. out (on the Sabbath) the size of half a dried fig, intend- ing to sow it, and it swelled (to the size of a whole fig) &c., v. צמק. Tosef. Shebi. II, 14 שיתפח כדי in order that it (the dung) may swell (or become moist, v. תפח III). Mikv. VII, 7 המים שיתפחו כדי that the water may rise in volume. Num. R. s. 9 ז צוארה ויתפח (not ותפח) and her throat shall swell. Y. Ter. II, 41 top הצמק את רואה אתה ת׳ כאילו look upon the shrivelled fruit as if it were blown up (of full size). Ib. לתפוה, v. הפה; a. fr. - Part. pass. תפוח round and smooth. Y. Nidd. III, 50a bot. ת׳ ראשו כתורמוס the head (of the embryo) is round and smooth as a lupine; כקרקבן as a bird's maw.

תפח m. (תפח I) blown up, swollen (fgs, dates &c.). Y. Ter. II, 41d top לתפוח הצמק דרך ואין לצמוק הת׳ דרך what is blown up (is in its full size) is liable to shrink, but what is shrunk is not likely to swell again.
