Hif,) to forewrcn, esp. to informa a person about to
coommit a criominal actt of the penalty which he will incur.
Snh. V, 1 (to witnesses) בו התריתם have you warned him ?
Ib. 40b וכ׳ עליו קיבל בו התריתם did you warn him? did
he accept the warning? didhe surrender &c. , v. נתר. Tosef.
ib. XI, 1 וכ׳ כל בו שהיתרו בין whether all the witnesses
against him or a part of them had warned him; שיתרו עד
עדיו כל בו (he cannot be punished,) unless all his witnesses
had warned him. Ib. 2 וכ׳ ושותק בו מתרין if they warn
him, and he keeps silence &c. Sifre Num. 113 (ref. Num.
XV, 33) מלאכתו מעין בו שהתרי מגיד this intimates that
they warned him, mentioning the nature of his labor (the
category under which it comes), בהם שמתרים . . . מכאן
וכ׳ from this we learn that in all cases of principal labors
intimated in the Torah warning must be given and the
category must be defined. Ib. וכ׳ בו שזהחרו מלמד this shows
that they warned him (to stop), and then (when he persist-
ed) they brought him before Moses. Snh. 9b בה שהיתרו
וכ׳ היתרו ולא אחרים when others had warned her, but the
witnesses had not; a. fr. -- Part. pass. מותרה, pl. מותרים,

תרי, תרא I ch., Af. אתרי same. Targ. Y. Num. XV, 33. -- Soh. 9a קטלא ביה אתרו ולא מלקות ביה דאתרו (׳Tosaf. למלקות) when they warned himm telling him that the penalty of his act would be lashes, but they did not tell him of capital punishment; a. e. - [Koh. R. to III, 9 לא מתרין, v. שיי.]b

תריס m. (=תאריס, v. ארס a. denom.; cmp. תגא a. תאגא) 1) shield (of twisted osiers &c.). Sabb. VI, 4. Kel. XXIV, 1 וכ׳ כפוק ח׳ הן תריסין שלשה there are three sorts of shields (with regard to levitical cleanness); the bent shield (which may be used as an improvised seat) is unclean as midras (v. מדרס), and that with which they play in the camp &c., v. דיצה. Midr. Till. to Ps. I; Yalk. ib. 833 (ref. to מגן, Ps. LXXXIV, 12) [read] וכ׳ שמקיף הת׳ (פיסאה איסקוטא, איש׳, being a gloss, v. טארגא) that is the taris, which protects man on three sides, contrad. to צנה. Ab. IV, 11 הפורענות בפני כת׳ . . . תשובה repentance and good deeds are as a shield against misfortune; [oth. opin as a shutter, v. infra). - Pl. תריסין. Kel. l. c.
