LIGHTS AND SHADOWS.

LIGHTS AND SHADOWS.

SEE ! the shadows creep Up the rocky steep, Chasing the sunset glory j And the river glows Like a ruddy rose, Telling the same old story

Of sombre night

Chasing up the light, To the list ning ripples merry;

Tis the tale I hear

With a listless ear, Crossing the Blithedale ferry.

All the sails I see

Glimmer black to me, From the keel to the pennon flying ;

Figures lined in gloom

On the sunset bloom, Shadows on shadows lying.

See ! the gulls wheel high With a stormy cry, They, like the sails, unlighted, As across I go To the shore heigh-ho !

Is it I, or the world, benighted ?
