MONSOONS OF DEATH
(Concluded from page 221)
he said. He suddenly grinned. "You've lost your glasses."
"I won't miss them," Halliday said. "I didn't need them. I wore them to give me something to do, that's all. But we're going to have plenty to do, now."
Ward swallowed with difficulty. He knew that in his wild, thoughtless act of heroism he hadn't redeemed himself. Redemption would come from a lifetime of playing the game the way men like Halliday did. But the chance was there for him, and he was glad that he could start immediately.
"Whatever you say," he said. He grinned, and added, "—boss."
THE END
BLIND TO GET SIGHT
FROM THE DEAD
A TRULY humanitarian venture has been organized in northern California recently. It is called the Dawn Society and its avowed purpose is to give the eyes of its members who die, to blind people so that they may see.
By a very delicate operation, doctors can graft the corneas from a healthy eye to a blind person to restore sight, but they have been held back due to a shortage of healthy tissues.
Many people have made oral promises bequeathing their eyes for this use after death, but relatives of the deceased interceded to prevent the eyes from being removed.
Realizing that something must be Jone, the Dawn Society was organized and each member signs that both his eyes may be removed after death. Within six hours after death the eyes are removed and placed under refrigeration in a light saline solution, which can preserve the eyes in perfect condition for two weeks, if necessary. But storing is not a problem as the demand for the eyes exceeds the supply many times over.
The blind persons who wish to receive an eye must apply to their own physician, who will in turn make application at the Dawn Society which will fill orders in order of receipt.
And just as the dawn of day brings new light to the world so does the Dawn Society hope to bring new light to the eyes of the blind.
