Crea. It was about fifty Miles from the Water-Side to Welton.

Coun. Was that the ſame Horſe you heard deſcribed?

Crea. Yes, it was.

Coun. What Marks had he?

Crea. He was a black Gelding, with a little Star on his Forehead, and carried a good Tail.

Court to James Smith. How long is it ſince you have known the Priſoner at the Bar? Look at him again.

Smith. I have known him from his Infancy, theſe twenty-two Years, and he is the very Richard Turpin which I have known at Hempſtead, and the very Son of John Turpin in that Town.

Court to the Priſoner. Have you any more to say?

Priſ. I bought this Horſe of Whitehead.

The JURY brought in their Verdict, and found him GUILTY.


When the Judge was going to paſs Sentence, the Priſoner was ask'd what Reaſons he had to give why Sentence of Death ſould not be pronounc'd againſt him.

Priſoner. It is very hard upon me, my Lord, becauſe I was not prepar'd for my Defrnce.

Court. Why was you not? You knew the Time of the Aſſizes as well as any Perſon here.

Priſ. Several Perſons who came to ſee me, aſſured me, that I ſhould be removed to Eſſex, to be tried there, for which Reaſon I thought
