ARCHDEACONS.
37

deacon of Canterbury is the entry in the Black Book mentioned in note (1) ; but as that instrument is undoubtedly spurious, his name ought properly to be removed from the list.

Anschibillus subscribed to the decrees of a provincial council in 1075.

William was archbishop Anselm's archdeacon, and three of that primate's letters[1] are addressed to him as such. He was also a witness to Anselm's charter[2], by which he gave the manor of Stisted to this church.

15 Hen. I.John, nephew of archbishop Radulf, was admitted 27th June 1115[3]. He was promoted to the bishopric of Rochester in 1125[4].

Asketin[5].

William[6].

Helewise: he held this dignity in 1134[7], and was summoned to a legatine synod convened at Westminster in 1138[8].

Walter, brother of archbishop Theobald[9]. He was elected bishop of Rochester in 1148[10].

Roger, surnamed of Bishop's-bridge[11]. He was promoted to the archbishopric of York in 1154[12].

  5. His name occurs in a charter of archbishop Theobald inhibiting the archdeacons of Canterbury from meddling with the capitular concerns of the convent, "more prædecessorum suorum archidiaconorum Asketini scilicet, Willielmi, et Helewisi." Somner erroneously calls him Ascelinus or Asketinus, and supposes that he became bishop of Rochester in 1147. Batteley however corrects Somner's error.

The original profession of obedience which Walter made to archbishop Theobald, signed with his own hand, is in the archives of Canterbury, and on the back of it there is a memorandum of his being consecrated and having done homage to the archbishop, viz. "Consecratus est in ecclesia Cantuariensi anno 1148. ii Id. Martii. Hominium archiepiscopo antea fecerat de terris episcopatus sui vi Kal. Feb."
