delegate to the democratic national convention in 1876. He has been a justice of the peace for twenty-five years in Lyndon, Vt.; and president of the school board for twenty years. Since 1893 he has been president of the Citizens' savings bank and trust company; and for twenty years was director of National bank of Lyndon. He is the author of Editors' Run in New Mexico in 1882.

He then subsequently moved to Clinton, Iowa; was city solicitor of Clinton for

four years; was clerk of the district and circuit courts for four years; and was mayor of the city of Clinton for two years. He has a large law practice in Clinton, Iowa.

Chase, Denison, manufacturer, inventor, was born April 13, 1830, in Concord, Vt. He has made several inventions. The most important is the turbine water-wheel, which for years has been recognized as the best made. He was president of the Chase turbine manufacturing company, which employed about seventy-five hands.

Chase, Dudley, lawyer, jurist. United States senator, was born Dec. 30, 1771, in Cornish, N.H. He was state's attorney for Orange county; was a member of the constitutional conventions of 1814 and 1822; and was a representative from Randolph to the legislature of Vermont in 1805-12, during five years of which he was speaker. He was again elected representative from the same town in 1823 and 1834. In 1813-19 and 182531 he was United States senator from Vermont. He was chief justice of the supreme court of Vermont in 1817-31. He died Feb. 23, 1846, in Randolph, Vt.

Chase, Dudley H., soldier, lawyer, jurist, was born in 1837. During the civil war he was colonel commanding the eighteenth regiment regular United States soldiers. He practiced law in Logansport, Ind.; and for eighteen years was judge of the twenty-ninth judicial circuit of Indiana. He died in 1902 in Logansport, Ind.

Chase, Emory Albert, lawyer, jurist, was bom Aug. 31, 1854, in Hensonville, N.Y. He was educated in the public schools of his native state; and graduated from Fort Edward York. Oct. 10, 1800, in Bradford, president of the Lyndon bank from its organization till his death; and was one of the organizers of the Vermont state agricultural society. In 1833-36 he was general of the first Vermont brigade; and was a representative in the Vermont state legislature. He died in September, 1867, in Lyndon, Vt.

Chase, Frederic Augustus, clergyman, educator, college president, was born Jan. 39, 1833, in King's Ferry, N.Y. In 1868-70 he was president of a female seminary in Lyons, Iowa; and in 1872 became professor of natural sciences in Fisk university of Nashville, Tenn. He died in 1904 in Nashville, lator,

He is a fellow of the American association for the advancement of science. He is the author of various astronomical Monographs. Bates college; and in 1844 of that institution. Chase, George Lewis, underwriter, was born Jan. 13, 1828, in Millbury, Mass. In 1866 he became president of the Hartford insurance company; and in 1876 was elected president of the national board of fire underwriters at Hartford, Conn.

Chase, George Wingate, congressman, author, was born in 1826 in Haverhill, Mass. In 1853-55 he was a representative from New York to the thirty-third congress. He was the author of History of Haverhill, 1640-1860; The Freemason's Monitor; Masonic Dictionary and Manual of Masonic Law and Tactics for Knights Templars and Appendant Authors. He died May 1, 1867, in Maryland, N.Y.
