To the right is a dog lying on a cushion. On the wall hangs a picture of Venus and Adonis ; near it is a painting of a mulatto by Frans Hals. On the left, through an open door, is seen a man who sits at a table reading. Signed in full on a step which leads to the adjacent room ; panel, 18^ inches by 16 inches. In the left foreground is a charcoal-pan ; at the door is a dog. The woman holds a sheet of paper on which is written " Der helpt geen medezyn Want het is minnepyn." (" Medicine is of no avail, since it is love-sickness.") Signed in full below the inscription ; canvas, 24^ inches by 20^ inches.
