GARRARD, Hon. Jaoob; 5. Harwich, Essex, Eng., June 88, 1846, t. of Joaeph Garrard, of H.M. Revenue Service, and settled in Sydney in 1867. Minister for Public Works in Robertson Govt. 1885-6, Minister for Public Instruction and Labour and Industry in the Beid Govt 1894-8, and sometime President of the Metropoli- tan Board of Water Supply and Sewerage.

GARTRELL, James, President of Adelaide Ghamber of Commerce 1906-6, and previously in 1900-1, partner in G. Wood, Son and Co., wholesale grocers and importers, since July 1866 ; b. Goldsithney, Cornwall, Eng., Dec, 1, 1846, «. of John and Elizabeth Gartrell, and arrived in Aust in Jan. 1849. Is a Director of A. Walton ft Oo. Ltd. He takes considerable interest in commercial and higher education, and is on the Board of Governors and Treasurer of the Methodist Ladies' College, also Committeeman of Prince Alfred College, Treasurer of Kinder- garten Union, and on the governing bodies of a number of philanthropic institutions. m. March 24, 1868, Sarah Lawrence; two daughters. Recreations —Fond of horses, animals, and flowers. Ad dreee— Ternilee, Burnside, nr. Adelaide.

GARVIN, Thomas, Inspector-General of Police, New South Wales, since 1904; ft. Sydney, Aug. 1848. Joined New South Wales Mounted Police Aug. 1868.

GAUNSON, David, M.L.A. of Victoria; o. Sydney, 1846, «. of late Francis Gaunson, si. Sydney and Brighton, Vic. Is a solicitor. M.L.A. for Ararat 1876-81, President of Board of Land and Works and Commissioner of Crown Lands and Survey in O'Loghlen Govt. 1881. Again returned to Legislative As- sembly 1886; elected as representative of the public officers to the reformed Parlt 1904. Address—Canterbury Rd., Albert Park. Melbourne.

GAUNT, Cecil Robert, Major 4th Dragoon Guards; b. Indigo Goldfield Victoria 1868, s. of Judge Gaunt, of County Court Bench, Vic. He served through the Afghan campaign on N.W. frontier of India in 1897 as Orderly Officer 1st Brigade Staff Malakand Field Force (present at relief of Chakdara Fort, mentioned in despatches, medal and two clasps), and throughout S. African war (present at the siege of Ladysmith and following campaign, wounded in second sortie from Ladysmith Dec 8, 1899, mentioned in despatches; severely wounded in the Transvaal, mentioned in despatches, and has Queen's medal with four clasps and King's medal with two clasps). m. 1904, Helen Maud Beatrice, o. d. of Major-Gen. Marsden.

GAUNT, Ernest Frederick Augustas, C.M.G., Capt R.N.; b. Beechworth, Victoria, Mar. 26, 1866, s. of Judge Gaunt, of Victorian County Court Bench. He was first Lieutenant of the Narcissus in 1896 when Gapt Lang was drowned at Grosvitoha Bay, and on that occasion the Commander reported that "the manner in which Lieut. Gaunt handled the cutter when the galley was lost saved five lives, with less skilful handling probably also the cutter would have swamped." As Commander he was Commissioner at Wei-Hai-Wei and Administrator of Lui-Kung-tao Sept. 1898-Oct 1899, and in June 1900 was appointed Commissioner and Superintending Transport Officer at Wei-Hai-Wei (mentioned in General Gaselee's despatches 1901), received the thanks of the Austrian and German Commanders-in-Chief for his services during the Boxer outbreak, and Decorated in June 1908 for his services in China. On Dec 6, 1908, he commanded the landing party at Durbo, Somaliland. avenging the death of an Italian Lieut, (severely wounded, and received the thanks of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and the Italian medal for valour). a». GAUNT, Guy Reginald Archer, Com-mander, R.N. ; b. Ballarat, Vic, a. of Judge Gaunt, of Victoria. As Lieut on H.MB. Swift he served during operations in Manila in 1897, as Lieut, of H.M.S. Porpoise com- manded at British Consulate during night attack on Apia, and raised and commanded Native Regiment — Gaunt's Brigade — during operations in Samoa 1899 (despatches and promoted to Commander), m. 1904, Marga- ret Elizabeth, find d. of Sir Thomas Wardle, of Leek, Staffordshire, and Swainsley, Der- byshire.
